[Solved] How to edit a chart
[Solved] How to edit a chart
Hi,
As a NKOTB, I apologise if this Q has been answered already, but I cannot find it.
I keep daily records of weather conditions using a chart and data table for a year at a time.
I used to be able to enter new daily info with a pop up (from right click in the chart) that said edit as one of the options, but I can no longer find "edit" in the listed options. I cannot find the chart data anywhere else either.
Can anyone please tell me where it has gone, or what else I can do?
Thanks.

Greetings and welcome to the community forum!
I expect it's going to be easier to resolve this if you can provide a sample document. Click "POST REPLY", then use the "Upload Attachment" link (below the message entry area). For tips on posting large or confidential documents, see: [Forum] How to attach a document here

Re: How to edit a chart
A chart on a spreadsheet is linked to a cell range, say A1:D100.
Make sure that the following option is turned ON:
menu:Tools>Options>Calc>General: "Expand references when new rows and columns are insterted"
In order to add new data to the chart, simply insert a new row or column of cells anywhere within the range or directly below the range A1:D100 before you enter/paste new data. Inserted cells will expand all references in formulas, charts and elsewhere.
Dumping data into empty space outside the referenced range does no more than that.
With the above mentioned option turned OFF, insertion of rows still works in the middle of that range. However, inserting one row at the top row of D1:D100 will shift the refrerence down to D2:D101 and insertion directly below the range at row 101 will not expand the range. In rare cases this is wanted behaviour, but for list keeping you always want that option turned ON.

Re: How to edit a chart
Thanks for the info - I cannot make this work.
Perhaps I am using the wrong section of the suite?
I will upload the chart as suggested by the other respondent - thank to you both for help so far.

Re: How to edit a chart
The chart module works in the Calc application.
You can copy-paste (or import) chart objects from the Calc into an Impress document, but the Object 1 seems a huge thing. I can not open your shared document with my LO 4.4.7 Impress application. I checked the zip archive.

Re: How to edit a chart
Thanks. The problem appears to be getting more complex by the minute, perhaps I will go back to paper and coloured pencils.
The Weather Chart is 452 kb, and used to work, up until mid November. I have been keeping records like it for many years, firstly with PowerPoint and then with the Open Office equivalent after MS put its prices up so much. So, I had several years with PP, then several with OO until it ceased to work. I think that this may have been after an auto update or similar, but cannot be sure.

Re: How to edit a chart
To me it looks as if the embedded object is an Excel chart. Did you uninstall MS Excel recently?

Re: How to edit a chart
I do not think that I have uninstalled Excel recently. It may have "died" through lack of updates, perhaps? Just to confuse the matter more: the problem is the same on three different PCs running different Windows versions.

Re: How to edit a chart - SOLVED
Many thanks to all who have given me hints and tips. The last point, about Excel from Villeroy, seems to have hit the mark. I checked all my machines and Excel was missing, so I loaded an old version and hey presto, the edit function has returned to the pop up menu and I have been able to enter the remaining data. I guess that when I created the chart in MS Powerpoint, and then swapped it into OO Impress, the data stayed as Excel. I will start from scratch with a complete OO document for 2018 if I am able to do so.

Re: How to edit a chart
If you can edit the chart data in Excel, you should be able to save or export the data in some way that OO Calc can read it. You may even be able to use the clipboard copy/paste to copy the data to OO Calc.
