I'm working on a document with a two-column layout, with a .05" gap. I need to put in a table that will go across both columns, or rather the whole page. When I try to extend the table from the left column to the right column, the right column sort of gets layered over the table. I can type in cells but it's behind the right column. If there's a way to do it in the Table Format menu, I can't find it. "Allow table to split across pages and columns" is what I thought it would be, but it doesn't have any effect.
I tried to insert a section formatted for one column, but that actually ends up being columns within the page's columns. I do not have the option of putting the table on a new page.

Welcome to the forum
A simple way to do what you want is to add a frame and place the table inside the frame. The frame is a "page within a page" and insulates anything in the frame from other things on the page. The frame can span the columns. Insert > Frame > un-tick Autosize ... Remove the frame border if you wish by selecting the frame > right click > Frame > Borders > Set no borders ... Set the Wrap to how you want the text to flow past the frame.
If this solves the problem, please edit your original post title to [Solved].

Re: Putting a table across a two-column document
Use Sections to contain your columns before and after the table. That way, the columns stop, the layout reverts to single (i.e, no) column. You insert the table, then start a new section with columns after the table. See the attached file to see how to do this.
In my way, the column text flows across the page to finish above the table and can be restarted below the table in the first column; in John_Ha's way, the text continues below the table in the first column, then wraps to top of page in the second column.

Re: Putting a table across a two-column document
John's suggestion worked very quick and easy. Good thinking, John.
I haven't tried your suggestion, Rory, but from your example document it looks like it works fine. Thanks, Rory.
