Getting started with reports

so doing it in a report in base is ok by me but i just havent got a grasp of how reports work in particular why they will only draw from a single table /query (do they?) why cant i just grab fields from query's here anfd there and drop in.

I have looked around quite a bit at documentation but cant seem to find anything that really sets out the theory behind reports why these constraints. (this is what happens when you just start hacking instead of beginning from a sound theoretical base) in fact i here confess that i still dont "get" object oriented (gasp shudder) there its out i feel so much better now
