LibreOffice vs OpenOffice

Post by pdxsea »

What is the difference between LibreOffice and Open Office. I have Open Office 3.1.0. I guess I should upgrade. Which do I want and why?

See for example:
- LibreOffice vs OpenOffice.org
- Michael Meeks : LibreOffice and OpenOffice.org drift apart

personally, I stick to AOO (latest version is 3.4.1).

In a nutshell, I'd say: LibO focuses on adding new features and less on stability; OOo was always more conservative.

LibO has made some nice improvements; Apache is just getting started.

So do I, but I regretfully have to say, I see a problem introduced in 3.4.1. Namely, glossary function in Anaphraseus [1], [2] is lost. Since this problem did not exist in AOO 3.4.0 and does not exist in LibO 3.6.2 RC1, I dare claim it’s particular about 3.4.1 and not about Anaphraseus itself. I will, of course, test further, but the fact makes me feel alarmed, as I got used to every new version of OOo/AOO being improved and bugfixed as compared to a previous one.

I don't use anaphraseus so I cannot test, but if you can gather more information about this problem and report it, it will be really helpful for the project.

I appreciate the recommendations. Where can I find a summary of what the differences are between LibreOffice and OpenOffice? What organizations have charge of which?

Both are community led. So no real organization.
AOO is an Apache Software incubating project and LibO is a TDF project (The Document Foundation). Check their web pages (Google will find them easily).
Some 3rd party site may offer a comparison between both but I'm not sure they are all impartial...

I am quoting a message, for information, read on the LO documentation list. NB. the question has never been answered.
As we all know, LibreOffice default file format is ODFv1.2 Extended, which is
correct ODFv1.2 with some non-standard extensions.

If we are talking about document interoperability, we can reasonably assume
that other applications try to comply with ODFv1.2, as published by OASIS.
They may not display documents written in LO exactly the same as LO does,
because they are free to loss "Extended" part.

My question is:
is there any kind of documentation that points out which LO capabilities are
non-standard? If so, where can I find it?
