[Solved] Layout different from Windows to Linux

Post by eotakos »

Hi, i'm a new member in the forum, but i've been a OO user for a while... i've been working on my transition from windows to linux, and yesterday I found out that the .odt files are not recognized the same on both OSs. Or maybe i'm doing something wrong and someone can correct me!

i've created a writer file using the OO 2.3.0 under windows, and when i opened it under ubuntu linux (OO 2.3.0 again) the document was quite different - the spaces, the size of the fonts, the size and shape of math formulas, all were different. And the printing result was different too.

Hitting the about button in the writer under linux, i was surprized to read that it was "based on OpenOffice 2.3.0" - does this make it another program that is not OO? I don't know - maybe someone could help me with this. Because an office suite should see the same in it's own files, regardless of the operating system... right?

thanks for your time

Welcome.
1) Font differences are caused by the differences between operating systems. Windows and Linux interpret font definitions differently. The only way to make things look equal on both is by exporting as pdf.
2) Ubuntu uses its own version of OOo and you're advised to download the real thing™.

Btw make sure to read this thread with basic stuff about the forums.
LibreOffice 25.8.4.2 on Ubuntu Linux

The first thing to check when using both OS : the fonts. Windows fonts are not installed by default under Linux. Just install the msttcorefonts package in Synaptic and it should fix 95% of the differences. The rest will be due to the font interpretation from the OS.

NB: OOo displays the original font name but it doesn't mean that that font is available (it uses a substitution font). To check if the font is available, you can create a new document and look in the drop-down list if it appears. Or you can use that useful extension : TestFonts.

Don't hesitate to post again if you've any issue.

BTW, if you want to install the official version, you can see here : [Ubuntu] Installing OOo on Debian and Co.
LibreOffice 25.2 on Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE 7 Gigi) and 25.2 portable on Windows 11.
