Random hangs on OOo and LibreOffice

Hi,

I've always used some for of Open Office on whatever platform I use.

These days I'm on Mac but find that OOo and LibreOffice both have random hangs. The doesn't seem to be an pattern to why, the cursor just spins and I have to force close. Sometimes this doesn't happen for a while, sometimes I keep reopening just to have it hang again straight away.

I've looked for logs in the console but can't find anything to indicate why.

Not tried NeoOffice yet now it has to be paid for and don't want to pay and find it has the same problem.

Any suggestions how I can debug the problem?

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

The first step is to ensure that everything in OpenOffice.org > Preferences > OpenOffice.org > Online Update is unchecked. The online update process does not work and there are currently no updates to 3.3 anyway.

OS X 10.7 is relatively new and it has caused some problems for OOo users, especially the "Restore Windows" error. That problem, and hence that solution, is within OS X 10.7 and reinstalls of OOo will fix nothing. If/When this happens to you, see the post by GRMrGecko in [Solved] Mac OS X Lion OOo 3.3.0 Restoring Windows Error. I run OS X 10.6 with OOo 3.2 and have had almost no problems in 2½ years.

You could try resetting your OOo profile. That has been known to fix a wide variety of mysterious problems.

If you can narrow the symptoms somewhat it might be helpful to look at Apache OOo Bugzilla to see if you can find a reported problem, and hopefully, solution. There don't seem to be reports here of random hangs in OOo 3.3 on Macs. That isn't to say that OOo 3.3 has no problems, only that this symptom isn't mentioned much in the Mac section of the forum. If you haven't, search for "hang" or similar words in this forum and see if anything seems to match your situation.

FWIW I have had a few hangs in NeoOffice since Lion, mostly related to quitting, but not a lot. The developer has been trying to track them down, but we don't have a reproducible test case yet.
