Hello,
I can not figure out how to SHUT OFF automatic numbering in Writer.
If I make the mistake of beginning a sentence, or an indented sentence with a number or dollar amount, the program automatically numbers & indents the next line.
How to shut this off ?
Thanks,
Doug

When it happens, press Ctrl+Z (Undo).

This works ONLY on NEW documents you are working on. If you open a document you were previously working on that has numbering, the Auto numbering turns back on by itself. Even if you already applied the fixes listed above.

I agree... I encountered the same problem so many times... and i forgot to post it in here... let's discuss it and let's ask help.... autonumbering results to improper spacing of documents... and spacing is very important when it comes to legal documents... so the main problem here is when to turn off the auto numbering according to the user's wishes.... it's my problem too... please solve this wisemen... hiphip! ayt!

Re: How to shut off automatic numbering
Can you upload a sample file so that we check (see: How to attach a document here)?
It seems rather strange since it's an application setting, not a document setting.

Re: How to shut off automatic numbering
This is not my experience. I've only seen the settings behave as application, or global, settings: when configure automatic numbering on or off, it does not get changed by loading a document. If you open a document you were previously working on that has numbering, the Auto numbering turns back on by itself.
Maybe you can describe exactly what you did--what setting you're changing--and attach a sample document that changes the setting, as Hagar suggested?

Re: How to shut off automatic numbering
Hi guys, I shared your problem with the auto numbering. I prefer to do this myself, and this was messing me up. Turning it off has no effect, as previously noted.
Here's how I fixed it: (my version is newer, so my "paths" to the setting will differ)
Start numbering something so it activates auto-numbering. For me it creates a floating toolbar. (Another way to activate is F12.) Press the "Bullets & Numbering" button on the toolbar (all the way on the right). It should pop up a window, so go the the settings tab. Close the bottom there is a "Start At" field. Set it to the largest number it will take.
For me it still says "1" when I quit and come back. BUT it does not interfere in old or new documents in my preliminary testing, so I think it will work AS LONG AS YOU YOU LEAVE AUTO-NUMBERING OFF. IF YOU USE F12 TO TURN IT ON, ALL BETS ARE OFF (it will revert to inconvenient mode).
I hope this helps!

Re: How to shut off automatic numbering
There seems to be a misunderstanding about what the AutoCorrect option "Apply numbering..." actually does. It doesn't prevent or remove any and all automatic numbering. It only affects the automatic start of automatic numbering by typing certain character sequences. It does not prevent manually starting automatic numbering by pressing F12 or by clicking the numbering icon on the toolbar and it doesn't remove any automatic numbering which already exists.
