Opening an ODT in MS Word 2007

Post by barbarausack »

I was happy to install OO on my new netbook (Windows 7 Starter) as I was told it is compatible with MS Word. As a student, I need to submit papers in .doc format or at least allow the professors the capability to open my documents.

I had been working back and forth between my desktop (Windows XP / MS Word 2007) and the netbook (OO), but now I cannot open my ODT document in MS Word.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
Barbara

MS Office generally can't open .odt documents. Do File-->Save As-->Microsoft Word .doc 97/XP/2000, This should work.

And certainly do not expect it to be completely "compatible with MS Word". There will be differences.

Please note that the .doc import/export filters have been reverse engineered because there was no specification available at that time. MS won't make it easy for other applications to operate the MS file formats correctly. And they won't support standards neither (they don't even support the ISO version of their OOXML). That's the vendor lock-in policy, to keep their market shares. So beware, if you need to submit .doc, you may face some glitches. Better work directly with MS Word (or try to convince the teachers to use OOo and .odt, they are both freely available).

Word 2007 SP2 and Work 2010 can open ODT files.

The best option for sending files that the recipient doesn't need to edit is PDF.

There is a import export filter for ODT for Word 2007 which can be found here:

The MS Office implementation is not the best one.

See:
