[Issue] Offline Working with OOo 3.2

Post by kicker74 »

Hi there,

OpenOffice is installed now for ages under my Gentoo. But since version 3.2 I have problems opening documents offline.

Problem: It takes agesfor OpenOffice when I am offline to open a document (doesn't matter if text or calculation)

But it takes milliseconds to open a document when I am online.

So I think there is a process trying to look up something in the net. And the problem is the long time out. Tried to look with ngrep on eth0 but nothing really to see.
I was also unsuccessful look up "openoffice offline" - also "openoffice timeout" : it only tells me to switch off java (but as I know OpenOffice needs java to start)

Are there any option I can change so I can open a document in milliseconds when I am offline.

Thanks for any advice.

Holm

Those documents - were they copied from Internet pages? In that case a link to those pages may still exist, and then OOo will try to link to that page for updates or to download pictures, and of course if you're off line, that can take a long time.

OOo doesn't normally need Java to start.

You can check under Edit > Links whether the document contains any Internet links.

I hear that sometimes people receive documents that were once printed on a network printer and OOo can go off trying to locate the printer over the Internet ;-)

Hi there,

thanks for reply and the link.

Well first: no, it is not a document from the web where pictures have to be actualized, etc. It is a "New Open Office" document out of the box.

The behaviour is the "bug" described here at http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=112546.

But also: localhost will be resolved on my machine.

I have to check strace with OpenOffice, also the error (been shown on my cosole) (soffice:5581): WARNING **: unable to get gail version number

Will post when I am offline again.

Thanks

Ok, once again me: it should depend neither the gail version (it is just a warning) nor the localhost in /etc/hosts (I can ping it)

There must be something else why OpenOffice tries to contact the net.

Once again: I take off my LAN cable, start OpenOffice, it hangs (so long as the cable is not plugged in), immediately after
the LAN cable will be plugged in my machine it continues loading and start up in a second.

So where are the developers: what does OpenOffice try to search in the net?

Somebody has an idea.

Thanks in advance,

Does menu:File>Printer Settings...
point to some network printer?

OO tries to resolve a hostname "yourhostname.(none)" when opening documents!?
check' it out with:
$ sudo tcpdump -nnl -i eth0 -s 1536 dst port 5

If you put "127.0.0.1 yourhostname.(none)" into /etc/hosts everything is fine.

IMO a bug!

Thanks elek! That did the trick. I would also call it a bug (or something worse)

After 3 months and posting into qa I come back to my original post just to post the result. But I see: elek, taylorkh and Villeroy gave the same hints:

If you are sick of switching of the Network Printer or changing the /etc/hosts you can also do the following on the command line:

export SAL_DISABLE_SYNCHRONOUS_PRINTER_DETECTION="true"

Effects the same - for more information look here: http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=114254

Thanks

10 Years later I was having a similar issue with LibreOffice 5.3.6.1. Startup of applications took approximately a minute for each.

This appeared to improve a lot by adding the following to the HOSTALIASES file. I am not sure if all are neccessary, but hey I'm offline anyway ...

Code: Select all

openoffice.org 127.0.0.1
www.w3.org 127.0.0.1
www.apache.org 127.0.0.1
www.mozilla.org 127.0.0.1
Set HOSTALIASES to the file in which you added the above and run. E.g.

Code: Select all

export HOSTALIASES=~/.hosts
ooffice --draw
LibreOffice 5.3.6.1
