Saving indent on numbered list

Post by Ilan »

I have a friend whom I have persuaded to use Open Office and something bothers her.
She hates the indenting on numbered lists.
I have found how to reduce the indent to zero, and I even saved the document.
When I brought back the same document, erased all the text and put in new text, the indent on the numbering returned to its default.
What I am really looking for is some way to change it in the options so that it will STAY the way I set it.

Just to be clear, I go to Bullets and Numbering, Position, change the "Numbers followed by" to Space.
Then I set Aligned at to 0.00 and Indent at to 0.5 (or something else).

The point is that it doesn't REMEMBER my change and use it for future numbering.
It seems that there ought to be a simple way to make the change permanent.

Thanks,
Ilan

We use the ugly Microsoft format only when there is no choice.
Now we are talking about the OpenOffice format.

Have you tried to create a list style? It can be more robust than the direct formatting (using the toolbar buttons).

Thanks to add '[Solved]' at beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

Thanks Hagar. Could you please elaborate a bit more?
What I want to appear is a numbered list:
1. Item one
2. Second item
3. something else
4. all of the above have indent zero.

How do I do this with a list style?

Although I agree with Hagar's recommendation concerning a list style, It may be easier to teach a simple shortcut rather than open up a whole new set of features.

If you create a list using the toolbar buttons, the list is indented. This behavior can't be changed. However, if you put the editing cursor at the front of the first item in the list and press Shift+Tab, the list indent will be moved to the left--one press will make the indent zero. This will un-indent the entire list.

You have to do this for each list, but, as I said, it may be easier to learn one key than to dive into styles.

See Working with list styles (online guide).

In some cases, styles are more robust because they get a special export encoding, different from a mere direct formatting. That's why they survive better than the use of the buttons.
