Combination Charts: Lines and Columns

Post by lookinglass »

I have 3 data sets I'm graphing. I want 2 of them line graphs associated to the primary y and the 3rd data set to be column (bar) assigned to the 2nd y axis.

Can I choose which data sets are the lines and which are the columns?

thanks for any pointers!

In the Chart editor, Format > Data Ranges > Data Series

On the left, you should have a list of your data series. Click on the one that you want to be displayed as bars, then click the "Up" arrow button below the list, until it's at the top of the list. If that looks right, then click OK.

The series in the top slot is assigned to the bar chart; the others, up to the number of lines you specify, are all lines.

Thanks! That does help.
I noticed that while I'm in the Spreadsheet, I don't have access to 'Chart Data' it's grayed out. However, when I copy the the chart into a presentation, 'Chart Data' is available and worked as you described. In other words, I could only modify the chart as you described when I'm outside of the Calc.

Does that make sense?

Is there a way to make the modifications while in Calc?

Thanks for your help; It's much appreciated!!

Double-click a spreadsheet chart. Then choose "Data Ranges..." from the active chart's context menu.

Charts in spreadsheets use spreadsheet cells, other charts use separate tables.
OOo 2.3.1 Help wrote:Chart Data
Charts can be based on the following data:
Spreadsheet values from Calc cell ranges
Cell values from a Writer table
Values that you enter in the Chart Data Table dialog (you can create these charts in Writer, Draw, or Impress, and you can copy and paste them also to Calc)
Please, edit this topic's initial post and add "[Solved]" to the subject line if your problem has been solved.

Thanks! That makes sense.

Sorry if I'm being more dense then should be allowed while working in Calc :?

So, I can define the Data Ranges for the Chart, and I even tried selecting the specific rows in the order I'd like to have the data represented in the chart as Bars & Lines (1 Bar & 2 Lines in this example). From an earlier posting, I learned that starting with the last data series, you will get lines (for the number you specified, ie 2 in this case) and then the rest of the data series's will be Bars.

However, I can't seem to get the right data series assigned as a Bar. Calc seems to determine that regardless of my data series selection order, it goes by cell order. I've attached an excerpt. The goal being, without actually re-arranging the spreadsheet cells to have:

Test = Bar (2nd y)
Yield = Line (primary y)
Goal = Line (primary y)

Appreciate your time and effort to enlighten me

That's helpful to see your sample document--I hope we're not talking about two different things here!

Click on the image for a better view:

All I did was:
• Double-click the chart to activate the Chart application.
• Format > Data Ranges > Data Series
1) Click on "Test" to select that series
2) Click on the "Up" arrow to move the "Test" series to the top of the list
3) The chart changes to that shown in the inset, which is what you want, as I understand it.

The top data series in the list will be shown using bars, the rest will be shown with lines.
