OO 2.3.1 Install hangs

I've been using OO 2.1 and decided to update to the latest version available (2.3.1). I'd successfully installed v2.1 so didn't expect any problems installing this latest version. I successfully downloaded the OO install for windows, with the java runtime engine and started the install. Early in the installation, the jre exe would start and the install would just stop. There were no error messages and the task manager, while it showed the install as running, didn't show anything as 'not responding'. I thought maybe I had a corrupted file so I re-downloaded the install exe and tried again, with the same results. I used MD5summer program to check the MD5 (and SHA1) sums for both the install and the jre exe. There are included here:

The MD5 sum from MD5summer matches that on the OO website. I don't know what the MD5 sum for the jre exe is.

The last install I tried, I was again nosing around in the task manager applet and ended up killing the jre exe. At that moment, the install took off and now 2.3.1 is installed on my machine and seems to run fine. So, I guess my question is, what exactly does it mean that the java runtime engine didn't install. That doesn't seem to effect any of the OO apps at all.
The machine I'm running is a homebuilt box with:

1. Asus A8N-E motherboard with a firewall that's enabled
   4 GB RAM
   Hundreds of GB free hard drive space
   WinXP SP2
   AVG Anti-virus, free edition

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

You can try first to disable the antivirus before installing.
If no improvement, see that thread: [Solved] Cannot install Open Office 2., especially last 2 posts.

If you've Java already installed (quite always in Windows), you don't really need to update it.
