Eh, just install it, start Writer and get going. When you want to save something in MS Word format, click Save, then select as Word file from the bottom list in the dialog box. It's best to save as Word 200, XP, etc. You can't save in Word 2007 format (and can't open those files as well) in OOo. Have fun.

There is no icon on the desktop to start Writer. It should be on the Start button.

If you installed OpenOffice the programs are listed at Start--->Programs--->Openoffice.org 2.3 or something similar.

If OOo can't be found on the Start menu, it may not be installed. Did you double-click the downloaded file to install OOo? What is the icon on the desktop? Is it a file, a folder, a shortcut, something else? What is its name? If it's a folder, what's in the folder? When you go to Add/Remove Programs, is OOo listed?
