My question is simple. Does Open Office work with SharePoint document version control. That is can you check out documents change them and the check them in without much problem.

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Does there have to be integration between OOo and sharepoint for this to work? That is, does Word or whatever you are using now have any special commands or toolbars that inter-operate with the version control system? If so, I doubt they will work with OOo.

But if you are asking whether the sharepoint version control can handle OOo format files, then we could easily test that. I can upload a dummy writer and calc file and you can try checking them in and out.

If I've misinterpreted your question, please correct me!

Thanks for quick reply. The reason I am looking into this is that a SharePoint client of ours wants to use OpenOffice, but are concerned that they will not be able to use the version control features that they have with MS Office. With MS Office you can decide to open the document in Word as an example and edit it and check it straigt in from word, even with metadata. I don't expect to be able to do that with OpenOffice, but if I can just check out the documents, download and edit them and then upload and check them in I think it would satisfy the need.

I would appriciate it if you could upload some dummy files for me to test.

There are some threads about SharePoint, see that query.

Do you or your client intend to save as .doc or .odt? It may have an influence on SharePoint behavior.

Well they have allot of word and excel files they want to store on SharePoint and they are planning to change from MS Office to OpenOffice so it will be mixed. But they will use OpenOffice to edit all office documents if they change.

I have read the other threads but I did not see a answer to my question.

I think it is anwered now with TheGurkha's answer. I would just like to be able to test it.

Does Notepad support SharePoint or will SharePoint scramble all text files due to Notepad's lack of support?
SharePoint is an MS product, so I would not wonder at all if they would sabotage everything that looks like a OOo document. For instance they could "auto-detect" all *.od? files as plain zip-archives and treat them as such unless you explicitly configure SharePoint to handle the files as office documents.

I see that Hagar provided some test files for you (I couldn't get back in to the forum for quite some time this afternoon). I also see you have marked your thread as closed - did you perform a satisfactory test? It would be useful for you to post back what you saw and what yopu achieved, so that others who come here looking for the same answer can learn from your efforts.

Here is an extension from Sun that makes OpenOffice-documents compatible with SharePoint:
