I just installed Open office 2.3 on a laptop running with Windows Vista Home premium, and an odd thing is happening:
If I download a document which was an attachment to an email, I can open it just fine. If I create a document on my local machine and save it - regardless of whether I save it as .odt or .doc - it will save to the location I choose, but in no known format. When I double click on it, a window opens asking me which application to use to open this type of file. I then choose open office and it opens fine, but the checkbox for "use this application for all files of this type" is grayed out, and I cannot check it. Thus, every document I create on my local machine which I wish to open must first be double clicked and then I must select to open the file type with open office.
What is going on here?

Re: Document Oddity
It sounds like you've got the "Automatic Filename Extension" checkbox on your Save As dialogue unchecked
Ubuntu 11.04-x64 + LibreOffice 3 and MS free except the boss's Notebook which runs XP + OOo 3.3.

Jesus! That's exactly what it was. I completely overlooked that. I never have had that issue with Linux, and I'm only using windows on the notebook at school. Thank you.

Yep, this one little checkbox causes a lot of confusion.Mitchel.Berry wrote:Jesus! That's exactly what it was. I completely overlooked that. I never have had that issue with Linux, and I'm only using windows on the notebook at school. Thank you.
You did a very nice job of describing the problem! Thank you for that excellent level of detail and observation. It will definitely help other users.
Cheers!

In fact, this feature is to be removed in the 2.4 version. But it has some nasty drawbacks, see that thread on the dev mailing list : Any workaround for "auto file extension" always on?foxcole wrote:It will definitely help other users.
LibreOffice 25.2 on Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE Faye) and 24.8 portable on Windows 11.

Re: [Solved] Document Oddity (no more file extension)
Thanks so much for this thread. I've been having this problem for awhile and could not find anything on it till I saw this thread.
I agree, excellent description of the problem by the OP, exactly as it played out. I also overlooked the automatic file name extension box. After reading about the problems removing the box will create, I'd like to have the option because I am the only one I know who uses OO and I frequently need to send attachments in Word format. I'd like to be able to manually change this setting.
Whew... now I can go to bed!
