[Solved] Unable to install Java Runtime Environment

Post by Maymes Attic »

Hello all. I'm having a bit of a problem trying to run a macro in Calc. I'm running OpenOffice version 4.1.14 on Windows 11.
I would try to run a macro, and a window would pop up saying I needed Java Runtime Environment. I downloaded Java Version 8, 1.8.0_391-b13 and it shows as enabled. But the problem still exists. I've restarted my computer several times.

Can someone please explain in simple terms (old gal here who used to teach computers but they were of the dinosaur variety) what I need to do?

Thank you in advance!

B

Did you download Java 32 bit to match OpenOffice which is 32 bit only on Windows?

I don't know which bit size I downloaded. It's Version 8, Update 391, 2023, and my OpenOffice is 4.1.14. Can 32 bit be run on Windows 11? I can understand on Windows 10, but Windows 11?

On Windows 11
The folder C:\Program Files holds the installed 64 bit software
The folder C:\Program Files (x86) holds the installed 32 bit software
Open Office is a 32 bit application and is stored in Program Files (x86).
You will need the (x86) version of Java for Open Office.
In Calc navigate to the dialog found at Tools>Options>Open Office>Java
Just below the box where the Java version(s) appears is the Location:
It needs to be C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre...
The 64 bit version is at C:\Program Files\Java\jre... which won't work with Open Office.

Got it! I found nothing in the x86 folder, but it's in the Program Files folder. I'll uninstall that and install the 32 bit version into x86.
Java said I needed what is apparently the 64 when I downloaded it, but now I know that's not the case.
Excellent directions. Thank you so much!

You can leave the 64 bit Java for programs that need it; the 32 bit will install alongside, and should be selected in OpenOffce (just once).

Okay, I removed the 64 bit, but when I get on the Oracle site, there is only the 64 bit available. I tried looking at some third party companies but one had a PUP warning. Can someone direct me to a trusted 32 bit site, as it doesn't appear on the Oracle site.
Thank you!

The link still sends me to 64 bit. Not sure why.
OS is Windows 11; I said it in my original post, but I guess I should update it in my signature. Thank you!

Link to Oracle x86 download
https://www.oracle.com/java/technologie ... a8-windows

Or
I installed the JRE .msi version of this on Windows 11 and so far is working.

Edit: Another option is Libre Office
https://www.libreoffice.org/download/do ... breoffice/
It is 64bit and uses the 64bit JRE.

I’m a long time user of OO and am not crazy about the LO user interface, so I use OO for most tasks but LO is much more actively developed. I have both installed on Windows 10.
