Again, proceed per the [Tutorial] Installing Apache OpenOffice on GNU/Linux.
First download the tarball from sourceforge.
Then extract it.
Then in a terminal go to the folder where are stored the .deb packages.
Then run the dpkg command.

Your screenshot shows you are not in the proper folder.
NB: please upload your screenshots here. I couldn't see them from my corporate office due to internet policy.

Try the dpkg command I have given above.
I did.

You did but in the wrong folder. There is a tutorial, you just have to copy and paste the commands. What's wrong with that???

You must have missed it when FJCC told you "Change directory into ./en-US/DEBS" in the very first reply to this thread just before he told you the commands to run to install AOO.

If you want to be the one who is never wrong, no problem with me.
But that is the end of the discussion for me.

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the 🖉 button if your issue has been fixed.

I don't remember him saying that was for every command or every command I would be given.

I have spelled out, in detail, all the steps in the posting at
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=102992

The only difference might be a slight change in the version number of the AOO download file.

Thus I stand corrected (the only reason why I add this last post in this discussion), apt install would have worked if run in the proper folder. Had never heard about that one (compared to gdebi and dpkg). It seems that it looks first in the current directory for the .deb files.

I'll try to summarize this rather confusing thread. Either the process in my first post in this thread or the process in the tutorial will work to install OpenOffice from .deb files. In short, purge LibreOffice, download the .tar.gz file, unpack it, change directory to the DEBS folder (./en-US/DEBS if you downloaded the US English version) and run either apt install or dpkg -i. The OP seems to have neglected to move into the DEBS folder.

Re: Doesn't install on Linux

Post by Bill »

The initial failure to install was caused by trying to install only the first .deb file. The install fails because several of the other .deb packages are dependencies of the first deb package. When apt or dpkg is used to select and install all packages, apt or dpkg installs the dependencies first and the install is successful.

I did try installing only the first .deb package using apt and dpkg. Using apt, the package was not installed. Using dpkg, it was installed as a broken package.

I can't reproduce the errors on Ubuntu Mate. AOO has never failed to install on Ubuntu Mate or several other Debian-based distributions.

I have tagged the topic as solved. I guess it is by now.
There is no point commenting, especially if it is to say it works fine elsewhere. Of course we know that already. Previous comment from Evelyn67 might be pre-spam posting, it may disappear in a while.
Thus I lock the topic too. In case it has to be reopened, just PM the moderators group.
