[Solved] Adding a Header to Existing Presentation AOO 4.1.14

Post by BobbyP »

Hello All,
I have been trying to figure out how to add a header to my presentation.
Everything I find is adding footers, not headers.
In my pre-existing presentation I click ,'view','header and footer' but there is NO option for a header.
When I go into the slide master I type my title on the top line but nothing saves.
Under the "Insert' menu there is no option to insert a header.
If I convert the presentation to a PP presentation and using MSPP I can add a header to the Master Slide.
I would greatly appreciate any help w/ this!!

Thank you,
Bobby

I edited a Master Slide (/View /Master /Slide Master) clicked on the T symbol in the Drawing toolbar and was able to enter text at a top position on the Master Slide, which I then Saved. That pseudo Header appeared on all slides using that Master.

The Insert Header option is only for Notes pages.

+1 with RoryOF.
The concept of header/footer for a presentation is rather strange because presentations don't have to follow a "standard" pattern like text documents.
Thus, any area defined in the master slide can act as a header/footer.

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the 🖉 button if your issue has been fixed.

If the Header is Company information/logo, the solution might be to customise a master page to include such information, and use that slide master for the company presentations. The existing Footer facilities will allow the customisation for presenter/subject, etc.

For a one-off presentation, insertion of required Header information on the Master Slide as Hagar and I have outlined should suffice.

I did as suggested and the header does not save to my slide.
I did the following:
View,Master,Slide Master
I entered text in the top field.
I then save the file.
When I re-open the file the header is not there. It says 'Click to Add Title'

Don't put the text in the top field. /view /Master /Master Slide. Enable the Draw Toolbar, click on the T icon, then pull and drag on the background, then click in the guidance frame that appears and enter your text; press "Close Master view", and voila.

Thank you,
That worked. I feel that the concept of a header is not clearly shown, understood in a presentation.
It interesting that if you search on-line everyone addressed the Footer and not the Header.

Most of the presentation I see at work have no header at all. Only a "footer" to provide the date, slide number and the topic. They called it "footer" only because it uses to be in the bottom area of the slide, similar to a book footer.
IMHO, footer/header are just names for areas on the page/slide but it is exactly the same feature. For a presentation, the master slide holds fields that will repeat in any location of the slide, be it in the top/bottom or left/right areas. It could be the same for Writer pages BTW. It may be easier to keep the headers/footers with similar settings than the main page to have the same alignment. But you could have a master page to put anything at any place you want. Which is feasible by using frames for example.
So forget about the name: "Header" is not the best suited name IMHO, focus on the feature.

Actually, one can edit the Master slide (/view /Master/Slide Master) and pull the footer box to the top of the slide, or whatever position is needed. Ditto the date/time field and the Slide number area. Into these areas one can then /Insert /Fields from the range of available fields in Impress (less in number than in Writer).
