MacOS 14: Base says JRE version is defective

Post by charlie.it »

Hi everyone, I had to change my old iMac for a new iMac M1 with Sonoma mac OS14. The installation of Java for LibreOffice was successful but not for OpenOffice, as seen in the figure.
How can I do? Please don't make me read the tutorial Mac FAQ viewtopic.php?f=74&t=89283, I already did it but I didn't find the solution.
In the old iMac I had jre 6 and it worked great, where can I find it? will it work with M1s?

Edit: Changed subject, was Java issue

It looks okay to me. You told AOO to use a JRE, you get a list of available JREs and selected one, and with that done and after restarting AOO, it worked for me every time. Do you get an error message?

Do you have 32 or 64 bit Java?

Try the Temurin Java. That is really free for everyone (and it works for me on Windows).

Certainly Temurin Java works well on linux, and no doubt on Windows/Mac.

For information: at time of posting 13:45 BST 27 October 2023, downloads of the latest Temurin versions are failing for linux (xUbuntu 22.04.2) wityh error 400 (Bad request). This has occurred before and may be due to some misconfiguration on the adoptium servers.

If I try to open a Base table it tells me that that Jre version is defective.

I installed the only version available for M1 mac, both Jdk and Jre, but always with the same error message.

That seems 64 bit Java. The only available version of the AOO is 32 bit (for Windows) .

Maybe you must change to LibreOffice(?) That has 32 and 64 bit versions.

Thanks, as already said in my first post I already have java working with LibreOffice.
But I also wanted to have OpenOffice to give answers to the users of the Italian forum :D

I can't do any testing since I don't have that hardware or software. If you've read Oracle's Java pages and can't find an answer, a web search may locate ideas for you. Macs with the Apple Silicon chip aren't new (M1 2020, M2 2022), but MacOS 14 is, and there may be very limited experience with using OpenOffice on it. Good luck with that. Naturally we will welcome any insights you discover about this environment.

Maybe Java doesn't support MacOS 14 yet. Maybe it does but Base doesn't support that level of Java or it doesn't support MacOS 14. Switching to very recent MacOS versions always carries risk. Numbers will support MacOS14 and it's free for your Mac, probably already installed. I realize this doesn't help with your support of the Italian forum.

This topic is posted in the Mac OSX forum and charlie.it says the system is MacOS 14, not Windows. OpenOffice on MacOS has been a 64-bit application for ten years. The last OpenOffice 32-bit version for MacOS was 4.0.1 in 2013. MacOS 11 (2020) and later do not support any 32-bit programs. For any supported MacOS level, all programs must be 64-bit.

I get the same message.
M1 Macs use Apple Silicon processors (based on ARM)
OpenOffice is still coded for Intel processors and runs under Rosetta on Apple Silicon ( M1,M2)

Java works on LibreOffice, which is now coded for Apple Silicon processors.
