[Solved] Three Heading numbers in TOC

Post by kanuski »

I Changed the format of the style Heading 1 to include a chapter number. Then went to edit the TOC to include the Chapter number and it worked great. I tried to edit the number to include a space after and got the number and the space plus the original number. One more try only succeeded in giving me three numbers in front of each Heading 1 in the TOC. I can remove the numbers from the Heading 1 style and they all go away from the TOC as well. When I put the numbers back in the Heading 1, they all three come back to the TOC as well. There must be something I am missing.
It looks like,

Don't manually number your headings. Use Tools - Outline numbering or Tools - Chapter numbering instead. And please upload a small odt document, not a screenshot, showing the problem, so that we can see what's causing the trouble.

I didn't manually number them. I used Tools- Outline Numbering. I have deleted most of the contents but left the outline and TOC to show the problem in the attached file.

You have added 3 times the field for the chapter number in the entries configuration of your ToC. Remove the extra 2 ones (right click and Edit index):

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the 🖉 button if your issue has been fixed.

Thanks. I see the problem now but still don't understand how to remove the two extra ones.

Click a E# button and hit the delete key. Do that for the other additional E# button.
Then OK.

How to get the panel for editing the TOC properties:
Right click on the TOC - Edit Index - Entries (TAB)

...Or just delete the TOC and then recreate it.

Thanks. I knew it would be easy. I am glad I learned to do it without recreating it.
