[Solved] Install OpenOffice on Puppy Linux

Post by PFO »

Hey Gang,

I got all the way to the "Open Office 4" Folder in "Programs" using the terminal commands listed here and also the GUI install and can't get any further.

I have an older HP-Compaq nx6110 with
500Mg of RAM
1.5 Ghrz Celleron M processor.

WIN XP on a 50Gig hard drive with
Puppy Linux - BionicPup32 19.03
Linux Kernel: 4.9.163-lxpup-32-pae (i686)
Kernel Version: #1 SMP Thu Mar 14 15:41:19 GMT 2019
Build GCC: 8.3.0
PAE Enabled: Yes

The WIN version of Open Office works fine, but just can't get the Puppy side to open.

Any help greatly appreciated.
PFO

Hi and welcome to the forum!

What do you mean by "Programs" folder? It is a Windows thing.

Where are you stuck in the [Tutorial] Installing Apache OpenOffice on GNU/Linux?

What is the exact name of the downloaded OpenOffice file you are trying to install?

Meanwhile back at the farm . . .

So I seem to have installed Open Office 4.1.12 in 'root'. The "open office" file is there with the 'he' file inside.

/root/open office/he/DEBS/openoffice-core04_4.1.12-1_i386.deb

Sorry, I'm a defector from the "crapple - gulag - macrosloth sorftware wars, unfamiliar with the language of the linux world. When I say "programs" that's the file called "Program files" in sda1.

So, I'll re-install open office into "program files" and see if that corrects the problem.

In the meantime, any advice gladly followed.

I think you should click on the "get OpenOffice Apache" link at the bottom right of the Forum window, and select to download the 32 bit deb version (use the dropdowns to select it). It will have a name similar to (chose the exact language you want using the other dropdown) and modify the following filename accordingly

Code: Select all

Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.13_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-GB.tar.gz
In a terminal change to the Downloads folder then

Code: Select all

tar vxf Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.13_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-GB.tar.gz
This will extract the contained files to a subfolder of Downloads, in the above case called en-GB

Code: Select all

cd en-GB/DEBS
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
cd desktop-integration
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
and all should be well.

Sorry, Source Forge does not download 32 Bit DEB version, but it does download 32 Bit RPM version.

I downloaded 4.1.12 32 Bit DEB version from another WEBsite and have in download folder.

Have clicked on icon and extracted into "Open Office" folder in the "program files" folder.

WHAT TO DO FROM HERE IN THE QUESTION OF THE DAY.

Try again - I see it on my Sourceforge screens.

I gave full instructions, which work for me on all DEB based systems.

It does for me (just now checked), as a .tar.gz file, as I indicated.

I would not trust the other download.

You should go to a Puppy Linux forum and ask how to install OpenOffice on Puppy Linux. Simply extracting the DEB files doesn't install any program files. DEB files are used to install programs on Debian-based Linux distribution. Puppy Linux is not Debian-based, so I doubt that the DEB files can be used on Puppy Linux. It's my understanding that PET or SFS files are used to install programs in Puppy Linux.

@Bill: without wishing to get into an argument, I had researched a little and found this
Installing from a .deb package
New or newest versions of Puppy can install programs that are packaged as deb packages.
They install the same way a pet package does.
Download.
Left click on it to install.

The big problem with these Deb packages.
They may not have everything needed and the Puppy version may not have the needed dependency files/programs.
Some Deb packaged programs just work.
Others need a lot of searching for missing stuff.
you should be using deb packages from a version of linux with similar versions of the base system libraries (e.g. glibc and ncurses). Otherwise the package you install might require newer libraries than are on your system.
The Check Dependencies Installed Packages program can help to figure out what is needed.

I agree that more directed help might be given in a Puppy Linux forum.

Hey Gang,

Solved the problem over at Puppy Linux Forum:

Perhaps Apache should archive OpenOffice posts from the various Linux Ver Blogs?
