Gmail cannot be used by OpenOffice because Gmail is not a program on your computer; it is service on the web. To send an attachment with Gmail, you have to go to the Gmail service and attach the document.

You can email directly from OpenOffice if you have a local program like Thunderbird. To use any online service, you have to work from that service.

It is solved by a workaround: use a desktop mail client to access your online account.

A good free desktop email client is Thunderbird and you can download it here: Thunderbird Download. You can add your Gmail account to Thunderbird. Tip: use an IMAP account, at least in the beginning. For help with setting up Thunderbird to use your Gmail account see this: Thunderbird and Gmail

If you run into difficulties with configuration and so on because you are a new user of Thunderbird then an excellent forum for help is mozillaZine Forums.
