[Solved] 64-bit Windows 11 want to update to 4.1.13

Post by Marjory »

I have windows 11 bit 64. There is a manual update for 4.1.13. I have to decide between 64 bit DEB OR RPM. I have java JRE. Cannot find any reference to DEB OR RPM on my system. Do not know which to choose or how to go about getting either one of them....

DEB and RPM are for Linux systems not for Windows. The download you want will be for "Windows 32-bit (x86) EXE". OpenOffice is not available in 64-bit format.

If I were you I would forget about OpenOffice and install LibreOffice instead. LibreOffice is actively developed and more up to date than OpenOffice. LibreOffice is also available in 64-bit and will open all your old OpenOffice documents without issue. There have been multiple recent reports on this forum with people running into problems trying to install OpenOffice to Windows 10 and 11 systems.

Thank you both. Had never heard of LibreOffice before.

OpenOffice is cruising into obsolescence and dying a slow death. Have to say that in day-to-day use using LibreOffice isn't that much different to using OpenOffice, in most ways they are very similar, and LibreOffice will open all your 'old' OpenOffice documents without problems.

The only additional thing that you would need to do to use LibreOffice is that some components of LibreOffice (but not all components) need Java JRE 64-bit installed to the system. If you want to install that manually then go to the Java Website and choose the Windows Offline (64-bit) download.

If you are not using OpenOffice and you don't need Java JRE 32-bit for anything else on your system then you can safely uninstall the 32-bit Java that you had in place for OpenOffice.

Wow - Thanks LastUnicorn. I have downloaded Java 64 bit and LibreOffice. Accessed LibreOffice and it appears to have copied everything I have in OpenOffice! I do not know if anything else is using Java JRE so guess I'll leave that alone. Super-great help - thanks again.
