[Workaround] Impress 4.1.13 crashes Win 11

Post by grelf »

Impress 4.1.13 keeps crashing with "Bad allocation" message. Once it completely crashed Windows 11 (22H2) on my Surface Book 3.

Sorry but I don't know whether I should trust this reply since it offers a quite different URL that I don't know.

Have you even heard of LibreOffice? This Forum is a COMMON forum for the StarOffice/OpenOffice.org derivatives. One of the is the LibreOffice. It was forked at the version 3.0. The developer team of the LO is much more active than the developer team of the Apache OpenOffice is.

Check the history of the LibreOffice:

Search the forum - especially the Calc forum - with bad allocation for many posts about it and an explanation.

See the Writer Guide, the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials and Writer for students.

Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.

OK more details: My primary files are always .odp but I always save a second copy as .ppt in case of trouble (up until a few weeks ago there was no need). My most recent work has been revising a presentation from 2019 with just over 50 slides. Nothing very special - plain black background, text, line diagrams all created with Impress, placed images (tiff, jpg and png). The program seems to crash randomly, not when I am doing any particular thing. Only once was it while saving .odp. The most serious crash, a few days ago, caused great difficulty in getting my Surface to start up again - I had to use the reset procedure holding the power switch for nearly 30 seconds.
I am presenting tonight. I managed to get Impress to save my slides as PNG so I will use Windows Photo Viewer instead of Impress.

I have recently been able to safely (no crashes) edit two .odp presentations from 2008, each of 60+ slides.

I would suggest trying Windows in Safe Mode on the Surface unit.

If you had transitions or if you want to use the presenter mode then try LibreOffice.
Maybe too late for this evening but worth a try. There are portable versions if you don't want to mess up with your system.
