[Solved] Prevent line wrap at specified point

Post by FrankInFL »

Something unexpected happened. In a line of text (in Writer) I wrote "... Colt .45 ..." and Writer placed the dot at the very end of one line, and split the '45' to start the following line.

Yes, this happened because that text was very near the end of the line. Similar uses elsewhere on a line leave the text as-written.

Is there a way, ala  , to tell Writer "you can't split this"? Is there, perhaps, a dot-looking symbol that Writer would see as unsplittable?

Edit: Changed subject, was Leading dot

Hi,
same result in ApacheOpenOffice 4.1.13. Perhaps use a formula (graphic object in text).
Tried again on: LibreOffice 7.3.5.2 - result is that 0.45 is treated as one word and not split.
More information and given possibilities: https://help.libreoffice.org/latest/en-US/text/swriter/guide/hyphen_prevent.html

EDIT
See further answers (MrProgrammer; robleyd) to the TO's question. I'm afraid I gave a misleading answer.

"0.45" will always render properly. The problem is "what happens when there's no leading zero, just a leading dot?" That is: " .45"

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Position the text cursor between the period and the 4. Then use Insert → Formatting Mark → No-width no break. This method worked when I tested it.

If this solved your problem please go to your first post use the Edit button and add [Solved] to the start of the subject field. Select the green checkmark icon at the same time.

I don't have that option for Insert->Formatting Mark. I have "Non-breaking space", "Non-breaking hyphen", and "Optional hyphen". Do I need to upgrade OO?

You'll need to enable Show UI Elements for Bi-Directional Writing in Tools | Options | Language Settings | Languages to see additional formatting mark options.

Solved. Thank you all for your invaluable assistance. What are "UI elements"?

I can't see a way to alter the topic title to add "(Solved)". What am I not seeing?

"UI elements" are User Interface Elements.

To Add "Solved" Edit the first posting in the thread and insert [Solved] at start of Subject line.
