Have you tried rebooting to deactivate the running programs? I am not a Mac user, so it's just a guess.

Try clicking "continue" when you get that error message. A restart is the other option if that doesn't work.

The Trash applet/droplet sometimes has a tendency to be somewhat cantankerous. One way to rid yourself of everything in your Trash folder is to open a terminal and type :
sudo rm -Rf .Trash/*
