This is my own fault for not paying attention. I unintentionally press a key or click something and disaster ensues.
I didn't want to insert a new slide but suddenly Draw has inserted one ‒ and another and another and another . . . it inserts blank slides at a phenomenal rate. If I can stop it in time (Esc seems to work) I then have to perform hundreds of undoes. But if I'm not fast enough OO is overwhelmed and craps out, losing any unsaved work.
Of course I don't know what I did. What did I do? And is there a way of disabling the relevant command?
If anyone has the solution I would be so grateful. Thanks in advance.

Re: UNWANTED MULTIPLE SLIDE INSERTION
In a way this seems like a symptom of a flaky keyboard but I find that hard to believe because it takes two key strokes to add a page: ALT + I followed by ALT + E.
I would first check whether the Insert Slide command has been mapped to some other key combination. Go to the menu Tools -> Customize, choose the Keyboard tab, set the Category to Insert and set the Function to Slide. If anything appears in the Keys list, use the Delete button to get rid of it.
Assuming that does not lead anywhere, I would reset your user profile. Shutdown OpenOffice. Open any folder and in the address bar near the top enter
%appdata%\openoffice\4
Rename the user folder to user_old. Restart OpenOffice. You should get the registration screen. Fill that out and see if the problem is gone.
