3.1 update

Post by JXUK »

Just updated from 3.0 to 3.1 today.
Didn't mind the 38" download on DSL.

What I do mind however, is the way it left without cleaning up after itself. Leaving the Download Install wizard, and the Installation folder sittin' there on my desktop.

Total installation time 1 hour and 5", A little slow don't you think?

I don't remember either of these things happening when I originally Downloaded 3.0.

Anybody have any thought's?

Win xp pro sp3
AMD 1.8
2gb ram

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Yep, you have to manually remove the temp folder yourself. It's always been that way, for as long as I can remember.

Your download seems slow though - as a test I just downloaded the US EN install and I got it in 7 minutes. I just have average UK home broadband - nothing special.

The install seems slow, about 30 mins on a 1.8 GHz with 2 GB. My server, running W2000 866MHz with 768MB installs in about 2 minutes. I'd suggest looking for some other problem, perhaps a virus scanner running in background.

As the install is disk intensive, is there much free space on your disk, and have you recently defragged it?

That seems odd for this day and age, is cleanup that difficult to incorporate?
Any best way to jettison the flotsam? Just send it to the bin? ctrl+del?, I have file assassin.

I have verizon DSL at 100Mbps. During a download usually settles out at 90.7KB/sec, never really thought about how that translates.
I did a test run on one of the Sites http://www.ip-adress.com/speedtest/ that you can compare against what the ISP gives you and came up with:
Download Speed: 744 kbps (93 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 131 kbps (16.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

I'm redoing the download as a test now. 147MB in 29” Better, 'bout what I'm used to.

AVG 8.5.364 was running, during download , but not scanning.
My age maybe showing, but before any install I always close anything that's running even in the tray whether it needs it or not. This time though I didn't defrag, I use Jkdefrag.

59.9GB free out of 80.6GB, last defrag 060309...MM DD YY

Thanks for the replies, It seems that everything is as normal as I'm used to now. OOo 3.1.0 is running better than the 3.0.

Just found out VZ wants to ditch DSL and concentrate on fe-fi-fo-fom. Fios. :(
An I'll look into any background processes...There are times I just can't keep the lid shut on lexmark.

It's not that they can't incorporate it, it is a (slightly peculiar) design decision to leave the installation files for you, so you can either choose to delete them or b) move them to a location you're happy to store them in. The idea behind b) is that you can then re-install without having to go through the extraction phase again.

To be honest, I just delete them. I store the downloaded file somewhere.
