Font Size Too Small

Post by Bhikkhu Pesala »

Am I getting old, or is the font size on the forum ridiculously small? Looks like 8pt to me. Since when has 8pt been a standard body text font on the Web? I have to zoom in to 150% in Opera to read the site. My default zoom is 120%.

To be honest - the font size is fine for me! 8-)
I'm using Firefox 2 with 100% text zoom on a 17" TFT screen @1280x1024.
For me it rather looks like 10pt. Maybe it is some Opera problem?

There's a button at the top right - with an A and two arrows on it - that cycles through three different font sizes.

Opera (9.5 Beta) renders the site just fine here. Looks like 10p to me.

The three sizes look to me like 8, 10, & 12pt. I think the default was 10pt, but I set mine to the smallest as soon as I started using this forum.

Edit: looking at the CSS the three are Large = 12px, Medium = 11px, & Normal = 10px

The default fornt for for the forum is:

Code: Select all

font-family: Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;
	color: #828282;
	background-color: #FFFFFF;
	font-size: 10px;
This topic did finally get me to do something I have been meaning to do and that was install Opera and here is a comparison - Opera 9.25, FireFox 3 beta 2
font_size_ff3_op9.png
Both browsers are set at 100% zoom - XP, 1280x1024 resolution. To be honest it does almost appear that the font in Opera is just a hair smaller or maybe lighter would be a better way to put it

I had changed my smallest font size back to the Opera default of 8px for some reason — I usually have it set on 12px and default zoom is 120%

I think the steps are too small — very little difference beween 10 and 12 px.

Try something like 8, 12, 16 px so that it really is noticable.

I am also using 1280 x 1024 on a 17" TFT monitor.

Don't confuse 8pt with 8px. They are not the same.

Expect the person just prior said they immediately set their size smaller...

Actually except for the initial setting the font size is never set explicitly like that - it is set as relative sizes from the baseline. In this case the baseline is 10px and then is sized relative to that.

Anyway - I am not going to be doing this tonight but most likely will be making changes over the weekend to the test forum setup and that is going to include changes to a few of the CSS files - I wouldn't mind trying to set some time when a few of us could try to be on-line and logged in together - the change to the CSS files is imediate - all you need do is refresh your browser - and we could try a few different settings and get a few opinions.

I could do something like 7 AM New York time - so that is 11 AM in London on Sunday for a session

No change here. The font button does nothing since I have minimum font size set to 12 pix.

I'm really not sure what to tell you - the font button works for me in FF and Opera under XP and FF 2, 3 and Konqurer under Ubuntu.

Yes. The font button "works" for me too, but since it changes between 8, 10, and 12 pixels and I have my minimum font size set to 12 pixels, it doesn't do much.
