Microsoft Office (any version) cannot open any of the native OpenOffice.org document formats. Microsoft's strategy has long been to lock people into their formats and products. And they have made a bunch of money doing that. If you want to prepare documents with OOo, but make them readable by MS Office, you have to save them in the Microsoft format. You can do this under File -> Save As. In the Save As Type list, pick Microsoft 97/2000/XP. It is safest to routinely save the document in the native OOo format and just save special versions to share with MS Office users. The MS format has been reverse engineered and the conversion process is not perfect. If the recipients just need to read the documents, not edit them, it is safer to export to the PDF format. There is a PDF button on the main tool bar. There are free PDF readers widely available.
