Unable to download OpenOffice

Post by mitcorb »

Hello:
I am newly registered.
I am trying to download openoffice. I have been unsuccessful.
Each time I tried, the download window opens but does not get past 0% even though the flying page animation is active. I tried alternate mirror sites, the last in Indiana but each time the same thing.
If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it.

How fast is your Internet connection?

The OOo download is very large. Even a moderately fast connection can take a minute before it changes from 0% to 1%. If you wait for 5 minutes and still nothing is happening, then you can be fairly sure something is wrong.

If that happens, I would look first at any security or antivirus software that may be blocking access to the remote site.

You might also want to look into getting a better download manager, something that would give you more details about the transfer and pick up where it left off if something goes wrong in the middle.

I don't believe it has to do with download speed.
I had a similar problem trying to update Java Runtime a few months ago. I ended up having to stealth the file in from a remote computer, transporting it by laptop and bluetoothing it onto the machine. After I did that, I stll couldn't deploy the file. Java Support finally came up with instructions to find the .msi file possibly in Applications Data and deploy it from there. These problems occurred even though I had set my firewall to allow the download and any other sentinel I might have been running.
There may be some problem with Windows Installer, or whatever it is currently called, but I am not sure. This issue is not clear to me.
I just thought that you had come across this in the past.
For now, I guess I will attempt the stealth/ bluetooth approach.

By the way, I am using Windows XP-SP2 fully updated. My connection is cable with at least 1 meg down. I am connected through a wireless router. Symantec AV and Firewall are the primary security software.

If you have any other thoughts, I would appreciate your reply.

Do you use a download manager? It should handle better such big downloads.

Better not use the wireless for large downloads - I believe it's a lot slower than a cable.
