Hey,
While running Openoffice I notice that it uses 300 megabytes of memory on my computer. Because of the virtual memory rules on my machine this means that 50 megs are in RAM and 250 in virtual memory.
This seems excessive to edit a simple spread sheet with 200 lines of 6 columns.
I had a look around the internet, the only thing I found was I can limit the graphics cache in memory settings, but I can't do anything more than that.
Why is Openoffice so memory hungry?
I am running OO on Ubuntu 8.04 ( but it reacts the same on 7.10 ). Is it because of the Java components? Are there many java compenents to run spreadsheet?
I read about some memory leaks in Openoffice, but I don't think that this is covered. It wouldn't make sense for a memory leak to occur in a stable software when opening a tiny document.
I found an article on ZDnet about this : http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=120
Thanks,
David
Memory usage is too high
Re: Memory usage is too high
The only thing that really matters is how much physical memory (RAM) you have. Your OS should be capable and optimized for running applications like OOo in the most efficient way possible, given the hardware you have, with no tweaking required.
Are you having a specific problem with OOo?

Which rules are you referring to? Are you sure this setting is better than the default?Because of the virtual memory rules on my machine this means that 50 megs are in RAM and 250 in virtual memory.

Re: Memory usage is too high
AFAIK it isn't so memory hungry. I had a file open to check, in Writer, and it didn't exceed, uh, 45 MB or so. Firefox uses more (47 MB with extensions, but I feel that's ridiculous). If your OOo takes up 300 MB for a small file, you'd better check your OS or your settings, as something is probably wrong.

Re: Memory usage is too high
For me, OOo runs about 200M "virtual size" with an empty text document, up to ~360M with a large spreadsheet with man graphs. However, only about 1/3 of that is actually resident in memory.
