[Solved] "No default printer found"

Post by ShadowTek »

I just installer 3.0, and when I try to print, it gives the error "No default printer found. Please choose a printer and try again". But there is no printer available to select, so I'm not sure what to do now.

This is the same problem discussed in the following thread, but no suggestions in that thread made any difference for me.

Printing was working fine while I was using 2.4, and I can't recall ever having any problems like this with Open Office before.

I'm using WinXP, SP3. The printer is an OKIPAGE 14e.

Hi ShadowTek and welcome to this forum!

I would try a couple of things. First try installing a new printer: for example, you can install a free virtual pdf printer like cutepdf. The purpose is to see whether a new printer is visible in OOo and other applications. While we are at it, can you export to pdf using the native OOo feature? This may be a workaround until you find the solution to your issue.

Second, you could delete your OOo profile. After you close all OOo applications and exit QuickStarter in the systray, find the folder C:\Documents and Settings\your_name\Application Data\OpenOffice.org and rename it as OpenOffice.old. Then launch OOo again, this folder will automatically be recreated. Then try re-installing your OKI printer.

The problem was that my firewall was blocking access to the printer.

I have recently installed Comodo Firewall, and I thought that I was assigning application permissions properly, but I had been selecting the wrong option.

I would like to reopen this question - because I have problem (after being set the default printer) to reset the deafult printer for document, with aim - that document should use the system (no document) default printer again. I don't see the option - how to do this reset?

I, too am having trouble printing with OO 3.1.0, both the Writer and the Calc apps.

When I try to print from either, I get this error pop-up window:
No default printer found
Please choose a printer and try again

I click the "OK" button, and a printer dialog pops up, showing my printers: A Brother HL-1440, and also PDF reDirect v2.

But the OK button is greyed out, so I cannot print. Changing from the Brother to the PDF generator did not help, either.

Both the Brother HL 1400 laser printer and the PDF reDriect work with my other apps.

My current workaround is to export the file as a PDF, then print from Adobe Reader. But I really don't want to have to do that all the time.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
