[Solved+Issue] Highlighting: major problem with MS Word

Post by mrgazoo »

Please Help!
My original document was in MS Word 2000/2003. I imported it into OO Writer 3.0, worked on it remotely, and now am trying to use it again in MS Word 2000/03/07. Now, neither Word program can get rid of many highlights that were originally there when I created them in MS Word. I do not want to go back to OO Writer to attempt to fix them because I fear my 200 page document will be further corrupted. I searched OO forums but could not find an answer that was applicable. If anyone can help me, I would appreciate this a lot!
Thanks,
Brian

What do you mean with highlighting?
OpenOffice 4.1.11 on Ubuntu; LibreOffice 6.4 on Linux Mint, LibreOffice 7.6.2.1 on Ubuntu

It's a known issue: Issue 24317: Highlighting - incorrect export to DOC
You can register there and add your vote (up to two) or comment.

There is a workaround mentioned there; I don't know if it still applies to current versions of Word:

It IS possible to remove in MS Word... Just select the mentioned text with the
mouse, go to "Format.Borders and Shading.Shading". There select "No Fill" and
the the Highlighting will go away.

I have had this problem and it is very annoying. To remove the highlights from Word, simply select the text you want and clear its formatting. To do this either select 'clear formatting' from the dropdown list to the left of the font chooser on the formatting toolbar, or open the styles panel and do it there.

EDIT: acknak's method is better because it doesn't remove ALL formatting from your text. However, if your text is relatively plain anyway, this method is quicker :)

By "highlighting" I mean the highlighter function in MS Word. I can highlight the text any colour I want to in order to find it easier.

Excellent, that means the methods described in this thread will fix the problem. Writer doesn't have highlighting... the highlighting tool just applies a character-level background color. You can achieve the same in by actually creating a Highlight character style using the paragraph's font settings and selecting the background color. Then you'd apply this style to the selected text.

Because Writer doesn't have highlighting in the same way Word does, it must convert highlighting from Word to a background color for characters. Going back into Word, there's no way to tell whether the author meant that color to be "highlighting" or to be a background color, so it remains a background color in Word and that's why you can't use the highlighting function in Word to get rid of it.
Cheers!

A solution that worked for me was this (in Word 2007):
Select the text you want to remove the highlighting/background from.
On the Page Layout tab in the Page Background group, click Page Borders.
Go to the Shading tab.
Under Filling, even if No Fill is already selected, open the menu and select it again (this is important!).
Select Style 'Transparent'.
Apply to: Text.
OK!
Hope it works for you too :D
