[Solved] Can't paste from the Snipping Tool

Post by ladyhawke10 »

Hi,

I'm using the latest version of OpenOffice in Windows 11. I have been having trouble pasting an image captured to the clipboard from the Windows Snipping Too,l into a document in Writer. I can paste it into Paint, so the image is, in fact, being copied to the clipboard, so the problem isn't on the capture side.

I see that this has been an issue in the past, but that was two years ago, so that problem should've been fixed by now. Either this is a regression or a new problem. Please help.

I have been having trouble pasting an image captured to the clipboard from the Windows Snipping Too,l into a document in Writer.
Use the regular way (from the menu: Insert - Image) with optimized images. Use a third party tool (like the free IrfanView) to optimize the size, resolution, and color depth of the images. In a Writer document: not needed a many megapixel image. Either the displays, nor the printers can not show you all of the existing pixels of a reduced size image.
Use .png format for the vectorgraphic and screen captured images, and use .jpg for the photos of the nature.

OpenOffice has always been sensitive to Clipboard utilities, and I suppose the Windows Snipping Tool, which I've never used, must rank with such. Best to follow Zizi64's suggestions and complete your task, rather than wait for a resolution.

For what it's worth, pasting from the snipping tool into Writer works on my Windows 10 system.

This is not a good assumption. There are very few developers working on OpenOffice. If there were workarounds in the past issues that you saw, continue to use them today.

The Snipping Tool copies data to the clipboard. The "clipboard" concept seems simple and easy to understand but is actuallly rather complex. When you copy something to the clipboard, the application performing the copy has no idea which application (or applications!) might later be retrieving the data via Paste. So a copy actually puts the information on the clipboard in several different configurations with the hope that at least one of them will be usable by the target application. I think the problem is very likely to be due to changes in how the Snipping Tool copies data on the clipboard. It has stored a format that Paint can use, but it hasn't created a format that OpenOffice Writer can use.

If this solved your problem please go to your first post use the Edit ✏️ button and add [Solved] to the start of the Subject field. Select the green checkmark icon at the same time.

Just an observation on Windows 11 (I don't know if it is at all related to the problem presented by ladyhawke10).

In Snipping Tool:
I select New (Ctrl+N) and take a screenshot. I can open it in Painbrush (via the "Edit with Paint" option)
or paste it into LibreOffice Writer. However, Apache OpenOffice Writer does not seem to paste anything.

Just tried again and behold. It won't work directly with Ctrl+N, nor with the button + New.

The screenshot opens in Snippingtool itself. There I can Edit and Copy.
(oops: opens in Paint :-(, that was not expected)
After copy in Paint it obviously pastes in Apache OpenOffice

If I use Windows-key + Shift + S I can make a screenshot and I can put it in Apache OpenOffice on Win 11 directly

If I close the Snipping Tool, pasting to AOO works.

Yep, that works too.
I use Greenshot for screenshots, associated to Print Screen. No hassles there.

Continuing with the Ctrl+N or the button + New issue…

Pasting an image doesn't work immediately (i.e without closing the Snipping Tool) in all modules: Writer, Calc, Draw and Impress.
However, Calc happens to be more user-friendly by displaying a message: The contents of the clipboard could not be pasted.

BTW, OpenOffice responds as expected when using the Snipping Tool's Text Action feature.
