[Solved] Set absolute cell reference with F4

Post by dsmccarron »

Hello, pardon me if this is answered in another topic but I have looked and searched and not found such a topic

I am using OpenOffice 4.1.16. Windows 11 Pro.

I am trying to set up a cell with which to multiple other numbers with. Say cell a1 is it and i have the number 10 in there. Then I want to multiply the other values by a1. So local cell x a1 but all of these reference a1. I have read in the documentation, and seen videos explaining how to make the a1 reference absolute by pressing the key F4 as one does in excel. But when I press F4 a window opens with two sections the left one saying + Biography. I have no idea what that is but it isn't an absolute cell reference. I have attached a screen grab of what I am seeing. I press F4 again and the window closes.

I can name the cell to make this work but I am confused why I follow the instructions but don't get what I am expecting. I maybe misunderstanding but my understanding is highlight what I want the absolute cell reference is in the formula and press F4, which is what I read and see in video.

Thank you for looking at this and hopefully I can come to understand what I need to do.

Douglas

and seen videos explaining how to make the a1 reference absolute by pressing the key F4 as one does in excel.
The Calc application (of the OpenOffice and LibreOffice) is NOT an MS Excel clone. There are many differences between them. And there are differences in the Hotkey map depended on the Locale settings (because the keyboard maps are different).
Otherwise the hotkey F4 (Cycle cell reference types) works for me in my Hungarian LO 7.5.8.

.

But, - in the my AOO 4.1.5 Portable - the function is assigned to the key Shift-F4 :

Side note:
Entering absolute address is also possible directyly by typing.
As long as the $ character is available from simple keypress, I find that it is more efficient to do it that way. Of course this depends on personal taste and habits, but I still thought it worth mentioning.

Just a note:
The F4 key has been assigned to switch between cell references in LibreOffice Calc 5.1 (see Release Notes).

Former settings (F4 for "Data Source" and Shift+F4 for "Cycle Cell Reference Types") are still available via
Tools Options LibreOffice CalcCompatibility, Key Bindings: "OpenOffice.org legacy").
