OpenOffice Calc constantly crashing

Post by wemccullough »

I have tried disabling 'auto-save', tried saving after every entry, and restarting the program but it takes forever to create a spreadsheet when it constantly crashes. Is there an answer to this problem?

Try resetting your user profile. With OpenOffice closed, open any folder and type
%appdata%\OpenOffice
in the address bar near the top of the folder window. That will take you to a folder containing a folder named user. Rename the folder to user_old and restart OpenOffice. You should get the registration screen. If the stability is fixed, you had a corrupted user profile.
Another thing to test is running in Safe Mode. You can find the instructions for Safe Mode on the web. If Calc is stable in safe mode, then you have a program that is started automatically and that conflicts with it.

I reset my USER PROFILE - still crashed
I removed all programs from STARTUP - still crashed
I 'unchecked' all options in OPENOFFICE - appears to be stable. I will continue testing before closing this item.

Which version is used? 4.??? Your signature is not complete.
Did you run with sufficient rights? You need to right-click and install as administrator.

I am running 4.1.15
I installed using the downloaded program which requires admin permission, I believe. I will reinstall if it fails again. It did not crash yesterday after 'unchecking' all options.

Could you please tells us which menu lists the options that you turned off? You've gotten a very interesting result.

From the STARTUP screen I cleared all selected items in TOOLS - OPTIONS - LOAD/SAVE - GENERAL
I need to do more testing in both WRITER and CALC - both have crashed many times during use before making these changes.

Why not give LibreOffice a try? There are several good reasons for making the switch anyway, some of which are mentioned here: [Tutorial] Considering a Switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? Some Useful Information

This said, the most current release of LibreOffice, v25.8.0, has a serious bug in that it consistently crashes if the user tries to use the 'Tabbed' interface (aka Microsoft's 'Ribbon' interface). So if trying that version just avoid the Tabbed interface for now. The bug is slated to be fixed in LibreOffice v25.8.1 and release of that isn't all that far away. Use of the Tabbed interface is entirely optional, personally I dislike it with a vengeance – the Ribbon was a huge reason in my abandoning Microsoft Office many years ago. LibreOffice have the good grace and common-sense to make the Tabbed interface purely optional.

For anyone interested the bug report can be read here: Bug 167956 - CRASH: opening a second document with tabbed notebookbar (WORKAROUND: Change UI to Standard Toolbar from View - User Interface)
LibreOffice 25.8.0.4 (x64) installed to Windows 11 Pro. 24H2
Apache OpenOffice Portable 4.1.15 [Portable Apps]
For Java I use Adoptium Temurin JRE LTS Releases.
