Hyperlinked Table of Contents

Post by thegrandrascal »

I am using Apache OpenOffice 4 - v4.1.15 - AOO4115m2(Build 9813) - Rev. 5f13fa0070, under Windows 11 Home 64-bit v10.0.26100 Build 26100 on a Dell Inspiron 3030.

I have a novella written with Chapters in "Heading 1" and Parts (sections) as "Heading 2." There are no page numbers.

QUERY: Is it possible to create a hyperlinked Table of Contents, such that a reader clicking on an entry in the TOC will be taken straight to the corresponding Chapter or Part? And if so, how do I accomplish this? I can't find anything in the Help file on this...

From the Help file:
Formatting an Index or a Table of Contents
You can apply different paragraph styles, assign hyperlinks to entries, change the layout of indexes, and change the background colour of indexes in the Insert Index dialogue box.
To Apply a Different Paragraph Style to an Index Level
1. Right-click in the index or table of contents, and then choose Edit Index/Table.
2. Click the Styles tab.
3. Click an index level in the Levels list.
4. Click the style that you want to apply in the Paragraph Style list.
5. Click the assign button <.
6. Click OK.

To Assign Hyperlinks to Entries in a Table of Contents
You can assign a cross-reference as a hyperlink to entries in a table of contents.
1. Right-click in the table of contents, and then choose Edit Index/Table.
2. Click the Entries tab.
3. In the Level list click the heading level that you want to assign hyperlinks to.
4. In the Structure area, click in the box in front of E#, and then click Hyperlink.
5. Click in the box behind the E, and then click Hyperlink.
6. Repeat for each heading level that you want to create hyperlinks for, or click the All button to apply the formatting to all levels.

Will this create a ToC where the "Parts" (sections, in Heading 2) are indented relative to the Chapters (Heading 1)?

P.S. A note to the developers -- the fact that so many people are asking, or are confused, about this topic should be a clear indication to you that its implementation is unclear or is too complicated. You should strive to simplify it.

BTW, RoryOF -- Nice picture of Pooh, but I'm fairly sure he's still under copyright...

If you create a guide for yourself on hyperlinking entries in a table of contents, other users may benefit from your notes. We have a Tutorlals → Writer section of the forum where you can put that. All the tutorials in this forum were written by users, not developers.

A. A. Milne's U.S. copyright on the Winnie-the-Pooh character expired on 1 January 2022, as it had been 95 years since publication of the first story. The character has thus entered the public domain in the United States, though laws may be different on other countries. I am not a lawyer but I think RoryOF's use of the image surely would fall under "fair use" guidelines anyway. Milne's books of stories and poetry were all published more than 95 tears ago.
• When We Were Very Young (1924)
• Winnie-the-Pooh (1926)
• Now We Are Six (1927)
• The House at Pooh Corner (1928)
I am quite fond of Milne's poetry and am happy to be able to quote it as part of the public domain. I met his great-grandaughter several decades ago and had her autograph a set of his books for me. We belonged to the same local club back then.

I stand corrected re: the copyright.

I too am a big Pooh-lover. When E. P. Dutton displayed Pooh et al., in their NYC offices decades ago, I visited them & took a picture of them! (I still have the photo.)

Those who are Pooh fans may like to know that most (all?) of Shepard's Pooh illustrations are in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and that one can there purchase cards of the original (not the Disney) Pooh illustrations.

When one is building a Table of Contents, the hyperlinking is achieved by placing cursor in the while box before the area required to be hyperinked in the construction window, and pressing the hyperlink button. Similarly, place cursor in the white space after the area to be hyperlinked, and press the hyperlink button. It is possible to hyperlink merely a small part of the ToC entry, but almost always one uses the entire entry.

There are many YouTube videos on how to build an OpenOffice ToC, I found at least ten by a simple search. I have not viewed them, so cannot speak for their quality. My preference is always for the written word when I need information.

(Yes, I'll read it! But I just wanted youse guys to see the sort of thing that I'm looking for by way of a final result...)
