I know that the kOffice team is aware of the need for progress. I don't know about the OO accessibility project.

Please read the Survival Guide for the forum. Especially that post : This is not a customer service, there is a link to the place where you can post such request.

HI
This wasn't so much a "request" but more of a "point to open discussion", and I didn't intend it as a "complaint" but as something which I think could increase the acceptance of OO, which I use exclusively in a Linux system. I moved it.

For the record, here it is: issue 84997, which will possibly be marked duplicate of 71542.

woodsmoke4, if I were you I would add a succinct one paragraph summary of the points you made earlier but have now deleted.

Where is the *small* suggestion? You found an easy way to plug an application to Vista's speach engine, and now you suggest to do the same with OOo? Where is the documentation of the required interfaces? Does Microsoft provide some simple examples on how to do this?
Please, edit this topic's initial post and add "[Solved]" to the subject line if your problem has been solved.

We know that, but : first, you're trying to convince already supporters of OOo and second, discussions here are not read by developers because it's not the goal of this forum. The only dedicated place is the issue tracker so that all the needs/bugs/complaints are put in one and only one place.

Posting here may be useful if you want to discuss first your idea before submitting it on the issue tracker. This is why you should put again what you'd written in your first post so that other could give their opinion. But be aware that you'll have to make the conclusion and post them on the issue tracker.

Hi guys
thanks for the nice discussion. I've posted on this several times in discussions at different forii in the Office threads, and was often told that I should bring it up over here, so i thought I'd give it a shot.

I have no idea about the complexities of what it would take to get Voice Recognition "going", but when Vista has it pretty well nailed down it seems to me that there should be some small sense of urgency to getting it going in Linux. When I have students who have no clue about anything talking to their machines and giving commands to their phones, given pretty high end phones and they are in some sort of "club" that somehow provides "software" for it.... I kind of thought I would "shop the idea around".

i quite realize that there other, larger, issues involved of which I have not the slightest clue.

But, again, when I saw what is going on, in kind of a "stealth" mode, I was just flabbergasted.

I pointed it out to the techs at Circuit City where I purchased the machine, and they said, "yeah we know all about that, it's voice recognition." And then kind of gave me a quizzical look, and these are real, valid techs. and they said something like "come again"...and they asked me to get the machine out, I was getting an extra hd to install my distro on, and I demoed it for them and their eyes bugged out!

Like i said, these folks are not idiots, I've dealt with them for several years. I indicated it to no less than three computer shoppes where I purchase "stuff", I donate computers with Linux on them and they didn't know about it.

This has, I think, just kind of "slid in" under the radar as it were and, in my humble opinion, going to be a VERY big deal within a short period of time.

EDIT: Just this last two weeks MS has been touting voice recognition in a couple of high end cars and that it is powered by Windows.... surely Linux could get some traction with this.

I'm aware that "developers" work at their own pace and at the pace of the consensus of what is needed, I just wanted to kind of bring this up for discussion to see if anyone thought it was worthwhile for a little discussion over a brew of their choice.

It may be that they've already discussed it and said no big deal...that's ok I just thought I'd run it up the flagpole.

Thanks again for the comments! :D

You can't edit comments, you can only add new ones.

Thanks Hagar,
I tried to "add a new one" and wasn't successful there either.

Just as a comment, I posted a rather long copy and paste at another forum, but in the article about ol' Bill at CES he emphasized that he is going to go after voice recognition and "touch", in the form of his "Surface" software and his "coffee table computer". I would like to gently remind folks that the original "Surface" was a Linux application. And it is why we produced Calypso Dancer and have spent money promoting it.

Again, I am fully aware that there are currents and undercurrents which are at work in FOSS and Linux of which I am not even slightly aware but it still seems to me that just possibly Voice Recognition might be moved somewhat forward on the agenda, especially when MS is now advertising that Windows is the voice recognition system in cars.

Dunno, just a suggestion.

HI
Hagar, and others, Itook your advice and just made a new "bug report" with a slightly expanded explanation.
I also took Kingfisher's advice and posted in a discussion about "KDE4" at the KDE forum

I really do want to thank all of you for your kind help on this.

I'll be here regularly, mainly lurking, to see if there is any "overt" response, for all I know, there may be something going on in the background, as it were.

And, by the by, I can do "instruction manuals".. if there would be a need to write instructions for use of anything in general, or particular.

You should post the link to your bug report here, perhaps other users will be interested in it.

I did that - see my post earlier in this thread. Unfortunately none of woodsmoke's supporting argument is there yet.

Hi Huw
Thank you very much for providing that link.

I have to make a correction on the "coffee table computer".. I stated that the computer was "oringinally a Linux App".

I was wrong.

The misunderstanding came from a post by a more experienced person at another forum a year or so ago when MS first gave a look see on the "coffee table computer". One of the forum members said that Linux had had it for a long time and then referred to the Han proggy/device and said "don't know which distro he was using".

We discussed that for some time and noone posted to the contrary.

Apparently MS began recorded research during 2001, Han and the other fellow Hurterer, later. This was brought to my attention evening before last, and it took a while for me to actually get the "hard" information, I posted a correction at KDE and am doing so now here.

Again, my apologies.

However, and I'm not pushing my "calypso" thing...I started work on it in August of 2006, so it predates the "exposition" of MS's table and was inspired by the work of Han and Hurterer.

However, back to the main topic, I want to thank you folks for going to the trouble to interact with me on this.

I realize that "the barn door is open" but if there is work being done at OO on speech recognition I will be glad to help with beta testing. I have two nice lappys, several desktops of varying speed from average to quite nice and have the experience with Vista to bring a critical eye to it. I am a published technical manual writer and can help with that also.

And...I could probably get a few students involved in it also....not "deeply" but I can definitely let them try it out, a lot of people on campus know that I run Linux, I'm kind of the guy who "keeps the IT people honest" in terms of compliance with various standards and they actually listen to me when I point out something that needs "fixin'" as it were...

And....if this all goes for naught...well, you folks very kindly interacted with me... and for that I thank you very much.
