Retrieving saved documents

I have been using OpenOffice for some time with no problems but now when I try to open saved documents they load with the page covered with X's.
First time it happened I was able to recreate but now the second document does the same thing. Need help.

Have such documents been moved from an old computer to a new computer?

Was the computer allowed sleep with such documents open? Did it crash when these documents were open?

Have you upgraded OpenOffice? If so, try restarting the computer.

The documents were created on the same computer. After updating the document, it was saved then program was closed with no problems with the computer. No upgrades .
