[Solved] How to open odt doc with more than 400 pages?
[Solved] How to open odt doc with more than 400 pages?
Hi!
I can't open my doc after changing the OO version.
If I waited about 10 minutes in the old version, now I can't open my old odt doc at all.
Pages in my old doc - about 450. It worked on the old version with a delay in opening, but it worked!
Where to search for the cause of this problem?
How to work in the OO with a big value of pages?

Re: How to open odt doc with more than 400 pages?
Your signature says "Version: 5.1.0.3", but there is no version 5.1.0.3 for OpenOffice and 5.1.0.3 is an old version for LibreOffice. What are you currently using?

Re: How to open odt doc with more than 400 pages?
Give it time to open - I have known files take up to 60 minutes to open, depending on the file complexity, computer architecture and operating system. Then Save As in .odt format and work in that format only. If in doubt, leave opening running overnight, or try opening using a live USB of a later version of linux.
For some reason I have not investigated, page layout of large numbers of pages (in the thousands) can be very dependent on the computer architecture.
I frequently work with files of 2,000 pages - more can be slow and cumbersome, although with older versions of OpenOffice/StarOffice I have used a file of 20,000 pages to prove it can be done (impracticably slow, however).

Re: How to open odt doc with more than 400 pages?
LibreOffice (and OpenOffice) can open a 450 page text document. There are several possible reasons for the document not opening and no one can determine the reason without more information and, preferably, inspecting the document. Can you post the document somewhere so others can download it? That could be a public drive like Google Drive or One Drive, or it could be a file sharing site.
Is the document pure text or are there many images or embedded objects?

Re: How to open odt doc with more than 400 pages?
I have just carried out some tests, using existing text files (book formatting, no illustrations). I am using Xubuntu 22.04.3, running on a 4 core i5-4670T at 4590 bogomips per core, with a total of 24GB memory
28,730 A5 page file of 8,981,208 words took 0:43 (m:s) to open
57,463 A5 page file of 17,962,417 words took 2:52 (m:s) to open.
Both files were .odt format.

Re: How to open odt doc with more than 400 pages?
The two .odt files I tested were 17.8 MB and 35.6 MB respectively.
If you have no success with your current setup, try running a different linux distro from a live USB, using the integrated LibreOffice; if the file opens, immediately Save As in .odt format, using another name so that you do not overwrite the existing (slow) file. Perhaps a live USB of a linux distro offering "persistence" might be best.

Re: How to open odt doc with more than 400 pages?
Here are some well organized odf type "sample" document files with ~680 pages, and with lots of OPTIMIZED images and other objects, written by Andrew Pitonyak.
(These are excellent AOO/LO Macro Books)
Download one or two of them and then try to open them.
They open in a few seconds in my LO if the LO already run before.

Re: How to open odt doc with more than 400 pages?
Thanks for all!
How I solved this problem :
- I downloaded from the bootable USB Fedora 16 with old OO,
- opened problematic odt document, took the last 20 pages, and saved it,
- rebooted into 39 Fedora and opened the short document its in the new OO without problems.
Thanks again!

Re: [Solved] How to open odt doc with more than 400 pages?
This fact indicates that your problematic documents have some issues, or errors:document from the site https://www.pitonyak.org/oo.php opened in 3-5 seconds without delay!
- missing fonts,
- huge pixel size images,
- incompatible image types,
- lots of redundant "styles" inherited from a foreign file format,
- ...etc...
Can you share one of your documents here?
