Microsoft Windows 11 screws things up, with a horrible start menu interface. Sadly, I can't spend any more time retyping lost data and appreciate the tip about Libre Office. I will check back to see if AOO has an upgrade to deal with Windows 11.
Since 12 years, this upgrade IS LIbreOffice. Since 8 years OpenOffice is walking dead. Nobody adds anything substantial to OPenOffice.

Okay, to eliminate the old file or the editing too many times. I deleted my old profile. Opened open office calc I opened a brand new file, put text in one cell and was able to copy and paste that single cell as many times as I wanted. Closed Open office, started a brand new file. Typed text in three cells. Selected those three cells to copy and Open office locked up. It does the same with only two cells, yet you can copy and paste one cell at a time as many times as you wish.

http://www.gnumeric.org/ looks interesting and would save the duplication from the whole LO package. No Windows versions available... rats http://www.gnumeric.org/download.html I'd need to install a language and a compiler.

Thanks, David. I'm giving Gnumeric Portable a try. It isn't as pretty for format appearance, but it works with Win11. Reads my relatively simple .xls, .xlsx, and .ods files including those from AOO. Data export to PDF doesn't like exporting blank rows or columns but otherwise ok.

If you want to debug why this is happening to you and you alone ...

... then start the PC in Safe Mode. Does it now do it?

As it is almost certainly now fixed, work out which program which starts when the PC starts is causing it. Clipboard managers are notorious for interfering with the clipboard.

Thank you John Ha, that fixed the problem, at least for now. I may still switch to LibreOffice.

I switched to LO and don't have the copy problem. And BWT I have the Windows 11 clipboard manager Suggested actions set to on. I consider the problem SOLVED.

Strange. It has been reported on LO 7.4.5.1 as Calc Freezes on Copy. Nov 22 Solution/Recomendations make no difference and is fixed by setting Suggested Actions to OFF.

Which version of LO did you install?

OK, I'm done! After working on windows for the last few years, I abruptly have this problem in spades. Every spreadsheet that I have now hangs has soon as I copy anything. I've tried everything suggested here and everything else that I can think of - copying files, renaming files, resetting my profile, recreating my profile, looking for and deleting suggested configuration files, having openoffice repair itself (via control panel "programs and Features"), uninstalling OpenOffice and re-installing, ... none of these made any difference at all. Two days ago, I downloaded and installed LibreOffice. The install was a breeze, the interface/look/feel is almost the same as OpenOffice and, with it, all my original files work perfectly. Assuming this continues, I'm done with openoffice.

As stated many times in many different topics, OpenOffice is (realistically) the walking dead.
LibreOffice is, has been (for many years) and probably will be the best upgrade from OpenOffice.
If you have trouble with LibreOffice, you can post in these forums and we, to the best of our ability, will support LibreOffice.

Eventually, it seems that orionstar found the fix in that topic. Thus, I tag this one as solved.

Edit: Added courtesy link to the fix orionstar found on 2023-02-12: turning off Suggested Actions

This is still an issue and highly disruptive. I am conducting financial analysis, and calc keeps crashing whenever I highlight a range of cells and hit ctrl c to copy them. This completely unacceptable that such a basic level function doesn't work, and has been a problem for so long.

I cannot afford this costly disruption. That's why people pay Microsoft's tariff to get a product that works reliably. Honestly this is complete BS that you cannot copy and paste.

For what it's worth, I installed OO 4.1.14 on a new laptop running Windows 11 Home 10.0.22621. I copied a spreadsheet from another computer and ran into the same problem y'all are having. If I copy or cut a cell or row, any subsequent action (even closing the window) causes the application to become unresponsive. This is repeatable and is unaffected by safe mode or pausing the anti-virus software.

The exact same spreadsheet running OO 4.1.14 on Windows 10 Pro 10.0.19045 works perfectly. Maybe M$ is determined to make OO unusable. Whatever the problem is, it doesn't look like it will be fixed anytime soon so I am dumping OO and going elsewhere.

Yes. But I would rather not turn that off to fix a problem in OO that doesn't cause a problem in other software. LO has the desired functionality without

turning off Suggested Actions.

I note that this particular issue has arisen on AskLO from time to time, so it seems it may also be an issue for LO. But if it works for you, that solves your specific problem.
