[Solved] File ownership
I have repeatedly been unable to open files, getting a message "You do not have permission to open this file." But these are files I created; their content is my original content; I created them on this computer. How do I stop this? Windows 10; Open Office 4.1.13

Re: File ownership
Have you changed your User Name on that computer? Or perhaps corrected its spelling?

Re: File ownership
No, I haven't. And it doesn't happen every time; it seems to happen more often with .doc files than with .odt files. Sometimes I can circumvent the block by changing the file to an .rtf file, but sometimes that doesn't work.

Re: File ownership
Check that you have Read and Write permissions in the folders in which the files are save, also that at system level you own the files.

Re: File ownership
thanks, I'll try that. That sounds like something that might help. Just in case I have a difficulty with this, how do I check those things? I'm a theology professor, not a computer guy, so any complication baffles me.

Re: File ownership
I haven't used Windows for many years, so it's either divine inspiration or help from a user of current Windows.

Re: File ownership
Sounds like it might be connected to a Windows Defender issue with OpenOffice. Try reading through this thread and see if you can get tips from there: [Solved] Need admin permission to open documents?
Or you could try just installing LibreOffice and seeing if that cures the problem. There are several good reasons to switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice anyway (particularly so if you are on Windows 10 or 11 system), some are given in this thread: [Tutorial] Considering a Switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? Some Useful Information

Firewall? What is the name of the firewall? What did you do to solve the issue? The information might help others in the future.
