[Solved+Issue] Java runtime error

Post by jimbokea »

Hi
When I am assigning macros to buttons in calc I get a java runtime error. If I keep clicking the Ok to the pop-up it will eventually accept ( after about 15 clicks).
If I look at options - general -java, nothing loads there. I have downloaded an up to date java.
How do I fix this?
Jim

Did you download a 32 bit version of Java? See Troubleshooting Open/LibreOffice and Java for more information.

I see you can add a file but cannot see where to get it from. The java in program files and program filex86 both have java folder but nothing in there will load

It might be worth trying an alternate version; if you installed the Oracle version, try Adoptium or vice versa.

Can any else help me here - I am adding a macro to a button and a requires java runtime error pops up - if I click this pop-up15 times it then lets me add the macro and it works. If I go to tools - options - openoffice -java, nothing loads. If I go to add and click on the java folder it says folder contains no runtime environment. What is happening here please?

There are a number of similar topics in the Forum - a search on problem install java windows 7 returns quite a few results.

One result that might be helpful - https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/v ... 54#p524954 about Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable which is also mentioned in the troubleshooting link I provided above.

Else, switch to LibreOffice, it supports natively the 64bit version of Java.

If you do need to install Microsoft Visual C++ runtimes you can get a package of them here: Visual C++ Redistributable Runtimes All-in-One Using that package saves a lot of time tracking and downloading them from elsewhere.

I agree with Hagar, switching to LibreOffice is the smart way to go nowadays. There are several good reasons to do so, some of which are given in this thread: [Tutorial] Considering a Switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? Some Useful Information

If it works after clicking the Requires Runtime environment OK button 15 times, what JRE is it using because it all works???

Will the programs I developed using OpenOffice still work with LibreOffice or will I have to redo the 100s I have done?

The Java dependency of the LibreOffice has been decreased by the developers when the license of the Oracle Java has been changed. (It is not free for everyone today). The LibreOffice can work without Java. Only a few built-in Wizzards and some third party (Java-based) extensions requires the Java. Most of its functions work without Java (more than of the Apache OpenOffice work... The Macro editing an association to the events work for me fine: I often use this function.)

The Adoptium Java (version 8) works for me with my LibreOffice 6.1.6 and 6.4.7 versions, and I can select it from the appeared list in the Portable LO versions 7.x.y.
(I have installed 32 and 64 bit Adoptium Java, because some of my other softwares requires 32 bit java.)
I was surprised, when the 32 and the 64 bit Adoptium Java appeared in the selection list of the 64bit LO version, when I tried to chosing the Java to use. Of course I have selected the 64 bit java.

The OpenOffice is (a littlebit) obsolete software today. Maybe you MUST install an older version of the Java for it, because (maybe) the AOO is not work wit the newer (newest) version of the Java.

More forum searching turned up [Issue] Error condition with JRE not installed which suggests it is a long standing reported problem still waiting to be fixed.

There are a few work-arounds suggested in that topic which may be worth a try; or just bite the bullet and go to LibreOffice.
Will the programs I developed using OpenOffice still work with LibreOffice or will I have to redo the 100s I have done?
Whether you mean macros or office documents the answer is the same - yes; LO is essentially the same package as AOO with some upgrades and improvements. Unfortunately the tutorial about changing over to LO doesn't seem to specifically address this aspect of the change.

Please put your correct version number in your signature so you don't get suggestions to upgrade. There was an old version which did have a bug that would cause this problem, but that bug was fixed.

Ok - have downloaded version 5 of java and we are back in business in AOO. Will not update any more java. It populates.
As There are several people using what I created in AOO I will stick to it rather than change them as well.
Thanks for your help
