[Solved] OpenOffice problem on Windows 10

Just downloaded open office, opened a word file, save as .odt. Made changes and saved, closed file. Now file opens, 5 seconds later just shuts down everything, including app, no message or warning.

Try the LibreOffice. At least a portable version of it. The LO has a higher compatible level with the upgraded operating systems and the foreign file formats than the AOO has.

Can you share the original word file here?

I you are new to OpenOffice then you might be much better off switching to LibreOffice instead. There are several good reasons to prefer LibreOffice over OpenOffice, some of which are detailed here: [Tutorial] Considering a Switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? Some Useful Information
