Add hyperlink to each entry in the index

Post by Repercussionist »

Using Apache OpenOffice 4.1.8 on a November 2020 Apple MacBook Pro (macOS BigSur version 11.1), I have a 164-page Writer Document with a Contents Index on Page 1 followed by 163 Poems,.
How do I add a Hyperlink to each individual poem title in the Index which, when clicked, moves to the individual Poem?
Thank you.

When setting up or editing the Table of Contents, on the Entries tab place cursor before the first entry in the Structure and press the Hyperlink button. Then click after the last entry in the Structure and press Hyperlink.

You've to use a Heading X style for the title of each poem so that it is taken into account in your ToC.

Many thanks for the speedy replies... however, I am still in the dark.

I have no idea what is meant by, 'place cursor before the first entry in the Structure and press the Hyperlink button. Then click after the last entry in the Structure and press Hyperlink.'

Also, what is a Heading X style?

I thought from your initial post that you had an actual Table of Contents.

Take the Title of each poem, place cursor in it, and press Cmd 1 (shortcut to use Heading 1 style)

Then, at place where you wish the Table of Contents, /Insert /Indexes and Tables /Indexes and Tables, and select Table of Contents on the Index-Tables tab. Change "Evaluate" to level 1; then press the Entries tab.

Click cursor in the lefthand blank box on the line labelled Structure and press Hyperlink button. Ditto in the righthand blank box. Now Press OK.
Your ToC should appear, with the names of the poems underlined, indicating they are Hyperlinked.
Edit: Try this at first with just one poem Title of your collection set to Heading 1 style

Aren't the hyperlinks active by default now in the ToC? Not sure there any tweaking needed with the structure line anymore.
It is at least with LO.

I have a list of 163 Poem titles I call 'Contents Index' however, thanks to your clue, I have just now figured out what a 'Table of Contents' is and inserted same.

> Take the Title of each poem, place cursor in it, and press Cmd 1
All that did was... change the (original) font from DejaVu (11) to Arial (16.1) and move the Poem title from the centre of the page to the left.

This is all new to me and, despite having read reams of 'Help' info., all to no avail, I am still clueless!

Read the document to which I pointed you. You will then know how to modify the Styles used for Titles and how to build a ToC. If you wish to use OpenOffice for a large document, you really need to know about using Styles.
