Re: Open Office writer crash on formula insert
Hi and welcome to the forum!
Have you tried to reset your OpenOffice user profile?
Did it use to work in the past (especially if you had a previous version of AOO)?

Re: Open Office writer crash on formula insert
I tried your instruction and deleted the users folder and also the 2 files that there written there. But neither helped, I have my old profiles data again now.
Quote:
Rename the user folder (see here for its location) to user.old for example. This way, you still keep a backup of your configuration. On a Mac, after you have selected the user folder in Finder, press Enter to edit the name, type a new name like user.old, and press Enter again to make the change.
and
Still not fixed: a dev seems to have recently found the root cause: close OpenOffice (including the Quickstarter) and in the user profile, go to the folder /user/extensions/bundled/. Rename the files extensions.pmap and extensions.db (if they do exist). Restart OpenOffice and see if there is any improvement.
Quote end
I never used that function in the past, so I do not know if it ever worked.

If even the portable version crashes, then that's really troubling.
You can try LibreOffice.

Re: OpenOffice Writer crash on formula insert
Create a new, empty document. Add a formula.
If it works there was a problem with the original document.
Also see Math Guide.
The gold standard for writing formulae easily is LaTeX. Nothing else even comes close.

LaTeX is the de facto standard for the communication and publication of scientific documents.
