Many of us here are not familiar with Excel's features - I had to search to find information. By "accounting format" do you mean locking the currency symbol to the left of the cell? If not, can you explain exactly what you want to achieve?

Not in Hungary.
The unit (currency sign) must be located AFTER the numeric value.
Maybe it is a locale-depending format.

The clou with accounting format is that all decimal points (or commas respectively) are lined up just like decimal tabs in Writer paragraphs. This is desparately missing in Calc.
Please, edit this topic's initial post and add "[Solved]" to the subject line if your problem has been solved.

To the best of my knowledge, Accounting Format is NOT available with OpenOffice Calc .

However, it is available with LibreOffice Calc .

According to the LibreOffice Calc Help ( F1 ) file:
LibreOffice Calc Help - format codes;numbers wrote:
Spaces

To use a character to define the width of a space in a number format, type an underscore ( _ ) followed by the character. The width of the space varies according to the width of the character that you choose. For example, _M creates a wider space than _i.

To fill free space with a given character, use an asterisk (*) followed by this character.
For instance:
*\0

will display integer value (0) preceded by as many as needed backslash characters (\) to fill column width. For accounting representation, you may left align currency symbol with a format similar to:

$_-* 0.--;$-* 0.--;$_-* -
Therefore, if it were me, I would create a Calc Template, and, define a Style, perhaps named Accounting Format, and, define the number format as above, and, probably change the currency symbol ( $ ) as you desire.

For example without or with thousands separator:
  • £_-* 0.--;£-* 0.--;£_-* -
  • £_-* ###,##0.--;£-* ###,##0.--;£_-* -
Attached below is a sample file that provides Accounting Format as you described it and it works with LibreOffice Calc .

I hope this helps, please be sure to let me / us know.
