It interferes with the useful way Windows works, where we can move between files, with the scroll bar where we click to move between them.
The only option I've found is to undock, where it's then more obtrusive. Although then I see I can move it below the page - however, then it's only gone until I click back on that file and then it's right there in the way again!
I presumed there would be a "disable this worthless panel" option, although it would probably be called something different, by the person who imposed that on all OpenOffice Writer files.
It should be that the X can close it, rather than undock it.
Thanks,
Dan

The Sidebar has a handle next to the Scroll Bar that can be clicked to collapse the Sidebar. I usually work with the Sidebar collapsed and click the handle to expand the Sidebar when I need to use one of the Tools that is on the Sidebar.

The SideBar is a very useful tool for me. The Styles, the Navigator, and many useful tools are avaliable on it in one place.useless side panel in Writer?
The Sidebar was developed for the wide screen monitors with 16:9; 16:10 ratio. Maybe it is not too useful on a small, old 3:4 ratio monitor.
