[Solved] Repeating crash on opening specific file
I've been using OpenOffice with great pleasure for years now. Recently I've been having repeating crashing with one very important .ods file. Opening any other file is not a problem, but opening this specific file always leads to a crash. I've tried copying the file to another location and opening +it from there, and I tried opening it on another computer. All with a crash as a result.
Here's the error message:
Process: soffice [1002]

Does anyone have an idea how to fix this? Do you need more lines from the error message? Please advise what to do!

Re: Repeating crash on opening specific file
The symptoms suggest an internal error in the file. Can you make it available for examination?

It has my company’s finances in it, so I’m a bit hesitant to make it public. I can email it to you though.

Perhaps not to me, as I am not a Calc expert; some other volunteer may offer.

Heavily edited files (File > Properties > General ..., shows how many times a file has been edited) often seem to get "tangled" where I don't really know what "tangled" means apart from the fact that "tangles" can often be removed and the file made more responsive by:jordihuisman wrote:It has my company’s finances in it ...
1. Start AOO
2. File > New > Spreadsheet. This creates a new, empty spreadsheet
3. Insert > Sheet from file. Navigate to the problem file and select it. Select all the sheets in the file.
4. File > Save as ..., and save with a new name.
If that does not work I will be happy to look at the file for you and I have sent you an email with my ID.
Another thought, though much less likely as the file fails on different PCs. Strange problems are sometimes fixed by resetting the profile - see Resetting the user profile.
As always in cases like this it is a good idea to ask Mrs Google what she knows about the error messages - searching with EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) mac found EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) and KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS.

Re: Repeating crash on opening specific file
I agree with John_Ha. I, also, would be willing to look at the file if the OP wants to e-mail it to me.
While I don't have a Mac currently, I will be getting a used one shortly, and will be able to examine the file under both PC and Mac infrastructures...just in case there's a difference in how the file is handled.

Re: Repeating crash on opening specific file
It can happen that a file is unstable on one operating system, but will open correctly on another and a saved version from that will then be stable on the original computer, so I wouldn't worry about not yet having a Mac, RusselB.
One of the things this shows is the need for regular timed/dated backups, as provided by this extension:
You can download it from
http://flowcont.hu/LO_oxt_store/
Note that you must invoke it separately using its button; it does not replace the standard save mechanism.

Edit: URL updated to point to later version of extension. This extension will work on both OpenOffice and LibreOffice. |

Re: Repeating crash on opening specific file
jordihuisman sent me the file for analysis. I replied with following email:
Jordi
There is something very strange happening here. I did the following
1. Opened the file with AOO. It crashed and did not recover
2. Extracted content.xml from the .ods file - it is the content. I checked the XML syntax and it was OK so no error in the XML.
3. Opened the file with LibreOffice and it opened!
4. Saved the file with LO as 2019kostenverkopen_saved by LO.ods. Opened 2019kostenverkopen_saved by LO.ods with AOO and it opened. I then saved it as 2019kostenverkopen_saved by LO_then saved by AOO.ods. 2019kostenverkopen_saved by LO_then saved by AOO.ods then opened fine with AOO.
I have no idea what is causing the problem but I hope this gives you the file back.
Some words of advice.
1. Install the Timestamp Backup extension which is designed for LO but (2018) works with AOO. When you use it, every time you save your file, you save it as normal but, in addition, you save a time stamped version of it in a separate backup folder. You need to delete older versions in the backup folder yourself.
2. AOO is effectively dead as there are few/no developers working on it and as time goes by it will get further and further behind. Your company should look at migrating to LIbreOffice which is still under active development.
3. Check the file carefully in case something has gone missing or has been changed
4. See [Tutorial] How to find and un-delete AOO temporary files for detailed instructions on how to
a) use Previous Versions (W7 and later) to recover previous versions of the file (is there something similar on MacOS and Linux?);
b) recover your file as it was when you last opened or saved it, or as it was when it was last saved with AutoRecovery;
c) find previous versions of the file in the folder it is located in, but which have since been deleted;
d) un-delete the temporary files AOO wrote while you were editing the file, and then deleted. This will recover your file as it was when you last opened or you last saved it.
This may get you back the actual file as it was before it crashed.
5. This is File > Properties..., where you can see the file has been heavily edited. It is a good idea to do the Insert > File ..., or even copy the sheets into as new file to try and clear the "tangles". Search the Writer forum with tangled or tangle to see some comments.
I then looked at the file sizes for the three files. The original was 77kB, when opened and saved by LO it was 76 kB but when that file was opened and saved by AOO it reduced to 69kB.
I then unzipped each of the .ods files to look at their component files and got the following results. I do not know how to interpret them.

Edit: A thought. It could be that LO has a better error handling capability than AOO which allows LO to open the file whereas AOO fails. |

It should be possible to use Tools > Customise > Events > Save document ..., to invoke the extension each time the document (or spreadsheet) is closed.
Alternatively, edit the Toolbar and File menu to remove the standard Save and Save As commands, and replace them with Timestamp Backup.

I agree, but out of the box it is not so linked.

Re: Repeating crash on opening specific file
I examined content.xml in the original file. The only thing which looked strange (there are 30,000 lines so my search was cursory) are the last few lines which include multiple #verw!
In the file saved by LO they were still there.
They were also still there in the saved by LO then saved by AOO file.
